Describe your soil, alkaline or acidic? Are you using organic or synthetic fertilizer? I live in Waxahachie, TX and I'm on all rock with about 4 to 6 inches of top soil. So that said your pics to me look like a iron deficiency.

I'm a ornamental plant lover, but I have around 15 different figs, 7 peaches, 2 plums and 1 Pakistan Mulberry. This is my LSU Purple fig planted in one of the worst growing spots on my property. This pic is from last week during our drought, in very alkaline soil, 100 degrees everyday and this 2 year old fig is doing really well and has figs. I just use good compost, cedar mulch and I water it deeply every 3 days, but being on so much rock I deal a lot with iron deficiancies. I don't have any photos of my Mulberry.

We had our lawn sprayed for weeks, and I am starting to wonder if some of the week killer drifted to my Kokusa Mulberry and my Peter's Honey fig? They are about 8 feet apart and the only trees showing these symptoms. I think I will also post the photos in the Fig Forum.

I'm a grounds manager for a university, so I have my commercial applicator's license and I'm no expert, but to me it doesn't look like drift damage, the mulberry looks very chlorotic. Looks like you're on porous soil, so you may be leaching out your nutrients causing the mulberry to become chlorotic. Your fig looks fine to me. I would spread more mulch out further to help hold in moisture and nutrients, and I would apply liquid Ironite at half the recommended rate on label.

I will take your advice regarding mulch and liquid ironate. Lowe's has this product:

Ironite 5,000-sq ft Ironite Lawn Fertilizer (6-2-1). Is this okay or should I go to a garden center?

Morning Elizabeth, no not that one. You need the little bottle of liquid concentrate http://www.penningtonfertilizer.com/products/ironite-plus-liquid-plant-flower-food. I would start off at half the dose of what's recommended on label, and then monitor it for the next 2 weeks and add more if needed.

Other fert companies also have products with iron added to it, so keep your eyes open for any of those. One I have used since 2004 is the Maxicrop liquid seaweed plus iron. http://www.maxicrop.com/pages/product_5.html Great stuff and they also have the fish emulsion with iron too.

Another great foliar feeding fertilizer is Garrett Juice, which can be bought or made at home. I used to make it all the time and then I would add fish emulsion to give it a little nitrogen kick. Howard Garret is the Dallas/Ft. Worth organic guru at http://www.dirtdoctor.com/.

Garrett Juice

Garrett Juice evolved over a period of years as I would tell readers and callers how to make an effective foliar feeding mix. The mix has always had compost, tea, molasses and seaweed, but the other ingredients have varied. Through trial and error, we came to the basic mix we use today. As always, my formulas are for making the mix at home, but there are commercial products on the market for convenience.

To make your own, here are the instructions:

Mix the following in a gallon of water.

Garrett Juice (ready to spray):
1 cup compost tea or liquid humate
1 ounce molasses
1 ounce apple cider vinegar
1 ounce liquid seaweed

For Garrett Juice Plus and more fertilizer value add:
1- 2 ounces of liquid fish (fish hydrolysate) per gallon of spray.

For disease and insect control add:
¼ cup garlic tea or
¼ cup garlic/pepper tea or
1 - 2 ounce of orange oil

For homemade fire ant killer add: 2 ounces of orange oil per gallon of Garrett Juice

Note 1: To avoid burning plant foliage, the ready-to-use solution should not have more than 2 ounces of orange oil per gallon of spray.

Note 2: We now know why the mix works so well, not only on the foliage, but also in the soil. The ingredients are a well balanced blend of nutrients and food for both beneficial fungi and bacteria.

Garrett Juice Concentrate: Mix the following: 1 gallon of compost tea or liquid humate, 1 pint liquid seaweed, 1 pint apple cider vinegar, and 1 pint molasses. To make Garrett Juice Plus add 1 pint fish hydrolysate. Use 2 oz. of this concentrate per gallon of water for foliar spraying.

BTW are there any figs starting to pop out on your's? Peter's Honey is on my list to purchase. I just bought 6 varieties: Conadria, Excel, Dr. Monticello, Verte, Olympia, and Alma. I put them in 1 gallon pots to over winter and in the ground they go in spring. Here they are and again you can see how dry we have been by my lawn, this was our first rain in almost 50 days. That's normal here for August.
