Book of the Week

1001 walks you must take before you die : country hikes,
heritage trails, coastal strolls, mountain paths, city walks
/ general editor,
Barry Stone ; foreword by Julia Bradbury.

So many walks, so little time! I love to walk and I take long walks once or twice a
week. This book has a wonderful
assortment of walks throughout the world and is divided into categories of
Overland, Urban, Mountain, Heritage, and Costal & Shoreline. There is an index of walks by country and by
distance. Each walk is described on one page, with
history, start and end points, distance, time, grade (easy, strenuous, etc.)
and type (urban, etc.) Photographs are also included.

Some walks are very short in distance and time traveled,
others are very long, such as the Via Francigena walk through England, France
and Italy that is a distance of 1,180 miles and takes 3 months. Three walks that caught my eye as ones that I would like to traverse are The
Carriage Trails of Acadia National Park in Maine (distance 45 miles, grade
easy); Kaieteur Falls, Potaro-Siparuni, Guyana (distance 25 miles, time 16
days, grade moderate to strenuous); and Herriot Way (named after author James
Herriot) in North Yorkshire, England (distance 55 miles, time 4-5 days, grade
easy). Stanley Park Seawall in British Columbia is
one walk in the book that I have experienced several times and really enjoyed
for its beauty (distance 14 miles, time 5 hours, grade easy).
