Is your sink marked in the layout? I can't find it. Also, could you post the measurements of your walkways?

Is your dishwasher going to stay on the wall perpendicular to the wall your sink is on? I think getting the dw next to the sink would be a good first step in improving your kitchen. Off the cuff, I would say to the left of your sink would be a good spot for it.

As for the island, it looks kind of far away from everything else. Are you planning to use it as part of the kitchen? Or as a buffet? Or? I guess I am not understanding where you are going with the island.

The sink is on the wall to the right on the 9ft section. The dishwasher is on the long wall so when the door is open it is immediately to my right when I am standing at the sink. I am right handed so this feels good to me. I dont have to move while loading it, just turn sideways. The room is between 19-20 feet wide. So you have 24" for counters on the long wall that the DW is on. so If I run the counter as in plans there will be about 42" from the edge of the island to the front of the stove, and the same on the short side on the left. If I run the island as in pic above from fridge to table, there will be about 5 ft from long edge of island to the stove wall, and probably another 4-5 ft behind the stools that will go under the island to the short wall at the top of the plans. To the left of the wall at the top is the hallway that leads to bedrooms and bathrooms. There is probably 4 ft from the end of the island to the front of the fridge. The island will have about 4 stools, maybe 5 . Havnet figured that far yet. We will probably eat most meals there. The dining table is about 5 ft long by about 3.5 ft.

Mama goose, I will prob do most prep work at the island right across from stove. I would like a prep sink there but I dont think hubby is too keen on the idea

Tammywv, I'm right handed, but my dw is on the left side of the sink,
and I don't remember having to adjust--it just works. I load from the
right side of the DW, then unload my dishes from the left side, directly
into upper cabinets in the left corner, so you'd think that would be
awkward, loading on one side and unloading on the other, but it's not. I'd like to be
able to move the DW to the other side of the sink to get it out of the prep
area, but there is an opening to another room on the right side of my
sink. Do you keep your dishes in the upper cabinets in the corner to the
left of the dishwasher? It looks as if you have only 12" between the DW
and the perpendicular counter, so unloading dishes into the corner
uppers would be easier from the left side of the sink.

I understand your hubby's resistance--not every kitchen needs a prep sink, but if an island is used for prepping, a sink will make it much more convenient and efficient. And if you have a helper, that person can use the space between the sink and stove as prep space, and can load or unload the DW without being in the same aisle in which you'll be prepping. It gives you more options. Do you ever have help in the kitchen, or will you have help in the future?
