Refinisher I hired having problems & complaining...should I bail?
Comments (2)I always wonder why people hire contractors for big jobs without really knowing how they will work. Speaking as a contractor there are certain clues that will tell you if they are good or not. Do they communicate well? Do they call you back in a timely manner? Do they show up on time and, if they don't, do they let you know ahead of time? Do they keep the job site clean? Very important. How do they handle changes in scope and unforeseen job site conditions? The good ones will warn you ahead of time about the conditions they can not predict and have some sort of agreement in place about what to do if conditions turn out badly. In Philadelphia I often run into botched previous renovations that structurally compromise the home. I tell people what the job will cost if everything inside the walls looks good. Then I tell them what might be inside the walls (termite damage, bad wiring, structural deficiencies, etc.) and we agree on what to do if I find something bad. I want to find the problems early so that neither the customer nor I are locked into an unrealistic job scope. Basically I build in an out for the customer if there is a problem. The contractor you hired should have done a test first. Also it is good to hire someone for a small part of the job first before hiring them for the big part....See MorePenninsula lighting - why is it so impossible to decide?!
Comments (12)Hey Cathy - aren't you the one that offered to be my "reno buddy" ?? It's fun to have someone else on the same schedule with me. Ours starts Monday (eeek, gulp, breath!!!) I think your light suggestion is also what my gut is telling me. I'll be sorry if I don't go with task lighting. I like the Charleston's a lot so I don't feel like I'm settling - but I did love the onion lights for more of a statement. Maybe I will find another place to use them elsewhere in the house - or outside on a decking post of the new deck my husband PROMISES to build me once the kitchen is done. All I can say is, start packing your kitchen up gradually. I way under-estimated how long it would take to pack up my kitchen. I"m also cleaning everything as I go, combining spices that I have multiple of... Yesterday was trash day and we filled about 8 bags full of "junk" that we do not want to clutter up the new kitchen with. I had all my medicine tucked into a kitchen cabinet - so it was a good chance to review all the expiration dates of everything and PURGE! Out with the old - in with the NEW!...See MorePhiladelphia Area Friends, Another Demo/Recycle House
Comments (12)I've never been to one, always falls on a bad day. And again, this date was a good one, until yesterday when my ds announced he got move in date wrong for school, it is Saturday, not Friday. But, from what I gather from their website, everything is removed and recyled. Yes, the floors are saved. I've seen them take an entire library's worth of wood from the walls. I think they even recycle the shrubbery. If the house is coming down, they sell it all off. Remember that show with the red haired lady? Jody? This was the type of business she was in, but she auctioned her stuff off. And it was a you buy it, you pay for it, and you remove it. Usually the people work together during the demo so as not to get into the way of another person. If you look at their website, there are photos that customers send in of kitchens, etc that have been reused and how they look in their new homes....See MoreCarrieB - Philadelphia Kitchen in Progress - Week2
Comments (134)I second blfenton - it's just been a day but so much has happened! Really glad the cabinet situation worked out, and it sounds like the shower wasn't too bad either (no need to remove walls or floor). The new tiles look nice. I also would have voted for the flooring on the lower left (and liked the swirly one too.) Things are really moving along. The kitchen looks great with the drywall up on the ceiling and the light streaming in the door. It's going to be so bright and welcoming! Love the kitties! Their personalities just shine through in your pictures and that great print! Thanks for sharing with us!...See MoreCarrie B
