Beginner gardener can use some help:)

I just moved into my new house in Washington state and it sure is beautiful here:) Well It looks like the previous tenants that lived in this house before did not do any gardening maintenance in the front yard's flower garden.I plan on revitalizing the garden but I'm a super beginner at gardening. I don't know the difference between top soil or garden soil..The garden is already filled with soil but the soil looks like it needs some TLC..What should I mix in the old soil so I can grow some flowers? My garden is about 48 cubic feet and about 3 inches deep so how many bags do I need of everything to get started? My husband and I are in a tight budget and it looks like this is gonna be an expensive project..Also how do I block the weeds from growing in the garden..I read somewhere that tarp is good to use, but how do I use that in the garden? Can anyone recommend and good gardening books for beginners?

Hi boobearcookie27. Welcome to gardening! there are so many friendly experienced gardeners here to help you along the way. i'm more of a newbie as well, but i'll let you know what worked for me. My first year gardening i was so anxious to start i put the plants in without amending the soil(huge mistake!)--so you are already one step ahead!

so, if you are not in a huge hurry to get plants in, my advise is to start amending your soil with shredded fall leaves, untreated grass clippings, and manure(if you can get it--many farms will give it for free) now & throughout the fall and let it sit & break it down over the winter. I even dig in my kitchen scraps right into holes in the garden & and put newspaper down (worms love the paper). used coffee grinds are good as well. many coffee shops will give you their used grinds for free. Then supplement with bagged compost in the spring-you can dig it right into the planting holes. it may take a season or two, put you should start to see your soil really change, and you will need much less bagged/expensive soil.

forgot-I enjoyed the book "the well-tended perennial garden" by tracy disabato-aust. it has a lot of pruning techniques but she also does explain a lot about prepping beds, choosing plants, etc....

Parsley is a cool weather herb in the southeast. If it dies, it's normal, so don't worry. Replant it in the fall and enjoy it through winter and spring. Assuming you did harden off the other herbs (if not, that's the trouble), the problem could be your potting soil. Herbs tend to like very well drained soil that's on the lean side nutritionally. So, if say, you used Miracle Gro potting soil with moisture control and fertilizer, the soil is staying too wet and the plants are getting too much feed. Back off the water first. Make sure the soil is nearly dry before you water. That may be enough for them to perk up. Next time, buy the straight Miracle Grow potting soil without the moisture control. (The fertilizer will leach out of the soil in a few weeks.) Arkansas Traveler is a really big tomato vine. You need a really big pot to grow it in: 18 inches wide and deep at least. If that's not the trouble, it may be hungry. Tomatoes in pots need regular (weekly or at least every other) fertilizer, and of course, they need consistent moisture. Don't ever let the pot go completely dry. The bigger the pot, the longer it stays moist... The pepper will be fine in your all day sun. Feed and water it just like the tomato. As the weather gets even hotter, it will do even better.

Hi lizalily :) You know, I LOVE apricot/peach roses, but wasn't so sure that these would look good or not. They remind me of my mom, in the sense that apricots were her favorite fruit lol. It's something else to consider for sure. I was going to add in some lime colors with the perennials for sure - hostas will be added and I'm going to be very careful about the leaf colors I choose. I think I have to lay off anymore hydrangeas at this point; I already have 6 of them, plus the tree and any more empty space needs to be for the roses and lower growing cutting flowers (I might be able to squeeze on more in somewhere, but would prefer not to).

Yes, Jeff (regarding the ternstoemia). Me, too. It's one of the plants that I would like to see another picture of. Any chance of a couple of close-ups of #18 (Japanese Cleyera), ljbrandt? Same with #1. I've wondered about that one being a Helleri. Say....does anyone think that #1 might be Abelia? All of those long little stems.... Ljbrandt, I'm going to suggest that you leave the Crape myrtle alone. It was a very bad specimen to begin with; more like a nursery cull if you ask me. It 'might' have been salvageable as a teensy weensy youngster. However, though it is almost always suggested that crossing and rubbing branches be eliminated, I would hesitate to do so on this tree. What you'd be left with would be very awkward looking, indeed. To say nothing about how stressful the removal of that much mass is to the overall health of the tree. I'd like to see the upper branches of this tree. Have the original owners topped it (whacked it down) at any time? If not, it might not be bad looking, after all! Don't go crazy with your pruners! The worst thing you can do is whack things off before understanding how, when, and why...and IF something should be pruned. For now, go ahead and remove all of the growth coming from the bottom of that Ligustrum (#5). You want to maintain a trunk just like a pretty tree. Remove any stems that have died, too. A pair of sharp hand pruners for this job. Looks like about a 5 minute project. Same goes for that ornamental whatever-it-is. The pretty pink flowered tree you mistook for a dogwood on your photo album. ALL of those long stems coming from the base of the plant need to be removed. The wrap holding the stake to the main trunk MUST be removed. Poor little thing. That long line of Euonymus needs to be sheared. I hate what gas powered or electric shears do to plants, and would get a good pair of long handled shears to keep on hand. Good job on the grass! Keep us up to date on your progress! Before and after pictures are fun.

Hi Since you seem to live in zone 10 florida might make some general comments about temperate plants here. Since the most you can hope for here is a cool rest period some years ,you picked a tough family of plants to grow .lol Any plant that MUST have a cold dormant period suffers here for sure . Now you CAN grow temperates here but need entirely different management methods. I find that there are just too many tropical species that flourish here to fiddle with extreme dormancies. Note that Florida has at least 4 major zones with dozens of micro climes . Of the CP"s your best choices are NEPs they grow like weeds lol While Sarracenias grow wild in northern florida they languish here. When selecting species choose those that require no dormancy as well as those from low altitudes that can't handle the heat. Look for TROPICAL species . Now there are ways to grow anything here but I guarantee you it's a lot more work than you want to do!!! This hold true for all kinds of plants not only CP's Save the temps for when you have more experience with fighting the heat lol goodluck gary

Don't use any kind of tarp, plastic, landscape fabric, or other synthetic type of barrier. You will regret it later, and there is no good way to regularly amend the soil and improve it. If you must, use a layer of old cardboard or newspapers, and pile on leaves (ground up even better). The leaves will start to break down, and lots of worms and other soil organisms will start working to improve the soil, Any weeds that do try to poke through a thick mulch like that will be fairly easy to pull by comparison, since the soil will be softer and more moist. Don't let anything go to seed (weeds), ever! Pull them before they can expand. There won't be many because of the thick mulch. I have picked up hundreds of bags of leaves from around my neighborhood the last few years as I've gotten extensive garden spaces going over a half acre lot. After just two years, my yard is amazing - and weeds have not really been significant - which is even better. Flowers, food/vegetables, fruit and trees, lots and lots of herbs. And it has been with almost nothing but those leaves and compost I make with the leaves and kitchen waste that I got for free.

Ditto the above statement on not using plastic, tarp etc....

I use cardboard boxes to control weeds for large spaces in my garden. Then cover them with mulch...could be leaf mulch or wood chip mulch.

Ditto on the addition of manure (older) manure. If fresh manure you run the risk of weed seeds in manure germinating.

I also add fruit and veggie scraps right into my beds. Cover with mulch and let nature takes its course.

A great inexpensive way to get a lot of coverage on the cheap is to sow seeds. Many flowers and herbs start easily from seed. A few of my favorites are: zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers, moss rose (portulaca), and sunflowers....I know I mentioned them already, but they deserve mentioned again. There are so many to choose from.

Start a compost pile/bin ASAP....The benefits from this "black gold" is invaluable.

I garden organically. Here's my logic. By going organic (not using chemicals/poisons) it allows the good bugs and organisms to do their work.... If you use poisons it not only kills bad bugs...it also kills/rids beds of all the good bugs, frogs, worms, birds, etc.

Do a little research on this site and other online sites. Read, take notes, do a little homework.
