I was fortunate enough to be in the Adirondacks for a few days and was amazed at how the roadsides were ABSOLUTELY COVERED in healthy, green milkweed everywhere I looked. (Its stunning how just a few hours away the habitat could be so drastically different). We spent an afternoon at a farm that participates in the monarch monitoring project. (my boys were less than thrilled to spend a portion of their vacation doing this-it was a short educational class then walk through the grounds to which they rolled their eyes) Well, within moments we spotted our first monarch, then another, and another... It was amazing. (We had not seen ANY back home). Well, I had to practically drag the boys out when it was time to leave. So nice to see their attitudes change and to witness them gain an appreciation and respect for not only the monarchs but nature in general. They are officially converted! Most amazing of all was when we got back home we spotted our first monarch fluttering around our garden-perhaps he followed us home!

I wish I had taken a picture, but didn't have a camera back then, of the Monarchs roosting on their southern migration in my backyard. I have a yard that is lined with hackberry, elm, huge virburnums, redbuds, etc. I was sitting out in the garden in the late evening, on my garden bench. There was no wind (very unusual in Oklahoma), and yet the trees were fluttering like crazy! I couldn't figure out what it was at first, and then I realized it was MONARCHS! I'm seeing Monarchs just about everywhere, from my garden, on my way to the store, on my way to work, fluttering just about everywhere. Granted, it's only one here and there, but still great to see them around. I had quite a few yesterday; 3 on one butterfly blush and I saw 2 on the other side of the yard. I didn't see 5 at the same time and they could have gotten over to the other side quickly, as they normally do. Even my neighbor, who is nature challenged, just asked how butterflies mate. I found this strange, but then realized he saw the back to back flying. He was pretty amazed, and I was thrilled. I currently have my first 6 chrysalids of the year, 3 of which should eclose today (I can't wait to get home!) and the others should follow, and 8 cats in just about all instars. This is a personal record for me, I think the highest count I've had was 12 released in one season, and I'm already at 14, unofficially. With all this mating going on, I could've had so many more, but unfortunately, I'll be going on vacation soon, so any new cats will have to fend for themselves, which is never good. Hopefully they'll be no more casualties, only having 1 monarch issue to date. It didn't eat for 5 days and was euthanized...

Hi Angie, we had some really cool temps (30's) for lows last weekend, but since then it has felt almost summer like both day and night. Last night I was outside at a bonfire in shorts and a tshirt! The male monarch was nowhere to be seen this morning, so he's likely headed south...and thankfully on a full stomach! We will have blooming butterfly bushes next season if they survive the winter. As for Lantana, there is a reason we didn't plant that but I can't remember what it was?? It will be interesting to see if the butterfly bushes are popular next season. We brought our third bush inside for the winter, so we should have at least one. monarch season here was extra long and extra busy. I hope you have the same experience in 2011! Tony

Monarch Chrysalis 2 months to eclose anyone ever heard of this???

Update on 3 of my chrysalises! 3 eclosed yesterday after approx 4 weeks - amazing experience and so beautiful! Sad news though that one fell from the spot it was holding onto (it was a little windy) right after eclosing. It was crawling in the soil so I put a stick down and it climbed up and I hung it from a nearby plant with a clothespin. The wings plumped up for awhile but never fully finished. I found it this morning dead. So very sad that it made it thru almost to the end to die. Butterfly raising, although so exciting, can be stressful. I understand why people raise them indoors and then release them!

So great. Amazing how Mother Nature can change kids' mindsets! Teens included!!

My little neighbor (5 yo) and one of our maintenance guys at work (72 yo) are now going to help me raise caterpillars when the Monarchs pass through my area in the next month. The little neighbor now knows the difference between m/f and her little 5 yo hands and stubby fingers are perfect for enticing a butterfly to crawl up to release them from the mesh cage if they don't fly out when the zipper is opened. I gave my older friend a tropical milkweed plant and 2 cats about a month ago...one really tiny and the other a few days older. He thought that he had lost the little one and was really sad. The older one pupated and he was thrilled at the release. The next day he found a HUGE cat on the plant (plant was inside, so not a new addition)! He was so happy that he hadn't lost the little cat. He's waiting for it to eclose now. It take so little effort to introduce this amazing part of life to people!
