craigslist freebies - id?
I followed a "free plants / curb alert" post on craigslist... picked up a couple things, including this bunch of sans cuttings. My sans experience is limited, so if anybody could offer an ID, that would be great!
There weren't many roots, and the planter was filled with swampy muck:
Forgot to take pics of the roots after hosing them off. These may have been dug out of a flower bed recently? The plants seem fairly strong. There are very few roots, but the ones that are there don't seem to suffer from root rot, so that's good.
After separating, cleaning, and planting (fir bark, miracle grow, and perlite mix):

Where to get freebies for the garden
Comments (8)I get fresh fruit/veggie scraps and egg shells to compost from the school where I work and containers/buckets for planting indoor seedlings. Old fencing from my DH's job. Mushrooms to compost, pine needles, rocks (used for marking, plugging up holes under the fence, etc.) from the hill behind our property. And logs for raised beds. Plant/share seedlings. Save/share seeds. Recycle foam cups, water bottles, deli containers, yogurt/ cottage cheese containers, vinegar/milk jugs, soda bottles...for starting seeds indoors. Ask around for uhaul horse manure. We have yet to go get a truck load and they offered to load it for us. A friend has goat manure to give us this fall. Neighbors gave us straw last yr and tree saw dust shavings this yr...for mulch. A guy on my DH's route gave us some raspberry starts..yum!...See MoreCraigslist freebie....Plant 2

8 years agoYou lucked out on a great gift. Wise of you to clean all the muck off the roots and plant in a more forgiving mix. Out side in the warm summer, they would be ok, but in the pots, you did the right thing. They look very healthy and strong growing. They are the Sans. trifascifia varity. Sans tri. 'Black Coral' has a different look. Easier to show than to explain.
Not my picture. Some leaves would look similar but it's larger and longer bands in general.

It's been nearly 3 weeks, and I wanted to post updated pictures... but, the plants haven't changed at all. The tops haven't grown, but hopefully the roots have. I did prune a few of the tallest and floppiest leaves because I was worried there wasn't enough root mass to anchor them upright in the wind.
re: purple plastic pot. There are two places nearby that provide plastic pot recycling bins (basically, big metal dumpster like trailers). One place is at a local university's gardens/nature-walk area, the other place is at a nearby city's botanical gardens. I dumpster dive these recycle bins.... stacks and stacks of colorful square pots, trays to hold them, hanging "baskets" (the two gray planters in the pic above), nice decorative plastic pots... I get 90% of my planters there. I get the impression that landscaping crews and local nurseries leave a lot of the stuff. If you like the square pots, here are the props I'm working on at the moment, including my one other sans that I separated a few months back (I believe, a hahnii).. lots of those square pots, and a tray to hold them!
