we need to see the medium ... it definitely should not be soil/dirt ... trees do NOT like the media that perennials and annuals prefer.. it holds way too much water for trees ... since you probably dont need a couple wheelbarrows full ... it is not reasonable to 'make your own' ... so i would suggest a bag of cactus mix ... the idea with trees/conifers... is that they like a sip of water.. and then near total drainage ... with just a little retained water ... BTW .. does you pot have drain holes???? ... it looks suspiciously like a 5 gallon bucket ???? and if you buds out ... and you decide to re-pot it.. it should be no lower than an inch from the top of the pot .... too much retained heat might build up if too low ... good luck ken

Get hose ready. If you have a rototiller, till one or two passes around, but just outside of rootball once planted. While this will have no bearing on immediate survivability, it will help the roots "break out" once they get going. Aside from these, there are no ideas I am aware of to help. There are numerous products available that purport to aid root establishment. I don't think any of these would hurt the situation. Likewise, I'm not sure they would help. Just make sure the soil of the rootball itself doesn't dry out. Best of luck. Sound like some nice trees. +oM

'RH Montgormery' doesn't burn. When they change color like yours has it's telling you goodby. Save your receipt. The success rate of B&B stock is much greater if fresh dug or knelled into a bed of compost until sale. Try to stay away from deciduous/conifer offerings that have set around all Summer if B&B stock. Instead look for new plantings as soon as your nursery receives their spring shipment. Sorry about your impending loss. Dave

that we’ve had for about 8 months ==>>> transplant stress is where i would start ... as i would presume a plant would come from a grower.. disease free ... i wonder about the cement and rock .. as heat traps ... and the shock involved moving from a growers perfect conditions.. thru a seller.. to your little spot .... plants enjoy a cooling off and recovery period after dark .. but stone and cement can hold heat late into the night reducing such ... the plant can acclimate.. in tree time ... and as it does.. shedding needles is the norm ... juniper are conifers.. and conifers are trees .. and they need to be watered accordingly ... a good deep drink ... and then near drying before the next drink ... most do not like constantly wet roots ... i wonder if you have landscape fabric under the mulch ... if so.. it might be interfering with proper watering ... and should be removed .... conifers .. in general.. hold their leaves ... needles .... 1 to 3 years ... yellowing and loss of such is cyclical ... interior ..... and normal ... and increased by any stresses ... but its never the growth tips .... unless subjected to severe stress ... some Js are extremely susceptible to tip blight.. but im not sure its this type [the usual type is J scopulorum ] ... being lazy as to looking it up for you ... btw.. you find your best info using the full latin name ...
