How far to plant Purple Splash climber from house?

I have an area on the east side of the two story part of our house that I made into a rose garden. I didn't have anywhere else to plant the "Purple Splash" climber that I have. It's been in the ground for a little over two months now, and had one cane that lived which is about 5 ft high. I planted it 24" from the side of the house, thinking that air circulation is good for large climbing roses. I bought a Dura Tell Estate Trellis which is 94" high and 58" wide. I was planning on placing the trellis on nails driven into the mortar, so this would be flush with the house. I suppose we could install the trellis free standing, if this rose is planted too far for the other application. One of the rose lovers here has a Purple Splash and shared a photo of it at her house. It's a giant of a climber, so this area should suit it well. I planted the rose centered between the end of the house and a window. I sure hope 24" is not too far. Any advice would be appreciated. I would hate to think of moving it, since only one cane lived. (hope this all makes sense.)

I don't think 2 ft. is too far away if it does climb well. That's going to depend, though, on how cane hardy it is in your zone. If it's cane hardy to the tips or close to you'll be fine. If, however, you have to cut it way back every spring then you may not even need the trellis at all and it will be more like a large shrub instead.

Two feet is not to far away. You can reinforce the trellis with rebar.

Thank you everyone for your input and ideas. Bboy - I'm having a hard time envisioning what you are talking about with the "green river" There are many Saucer Magnolia's in this area that seem to be pruned to be a smaller tree. There are some larger ones but I've never seen one 40 ft across. Even the largest oldest one's I've seen that have trunks like 3 ft wide (Seriously I'll have to go take a picture of that tree it's awesome!) aren't that wide. TALL yes, but 40 ft wide? not that I have seen. Of course, I'm sure it's possible but is it not also possible to prune it enough each year that it doesn't become that wide? Is this something that we can do to keep the tree in that location? The pine tree's in the backyard on the right hand side will be cut down at some point. That's down the road in our goals for the house. Thanks for the questions. The reason I don't want to really put it dead middle is that I like asymmetry, yet balanced - and also it would have to pretty much be smack dab in the middle of the yard to be wide enough away from the house. I'm not usually fond of tree's smack dab in the middle of a yard in front of a house. Thanks for all of your input and ideas. Hubby and I are talking things over and trying to decide what we will be doing.

Yes, think of the painting issue. I have my climbing roses on my house, but up against the fake stone part, so I don't have to worry about that. I started out with trellises, but last year took the roses off the trellises and strung galvanized wire between eye hooks. Then I attach the rose canes along the horizontal wires. The roses are better contained and I'm able to stretch them out more horizontal. It really depends on the climbers you are getting and how big they will get. I have 2 monsters. I would suggest that you begin this year training the canes to go as horizontally as possible, it's much easier to do this when the canes are young and pliable. And don't be concerned with blooms for about 2 years. It takes a good 3 years for a climber to get to where it covers the wall and will bloom like crazy.

Well, one of those pics on HMF is mine and I didn't realize just how "pinky" it looks! It is actually a really nice purple that does maybe tend towards a bit on the magenta or plum side. But it's definitely more purple than the pics show. Mine had a pretty decent repeat rate in the spring, but once the higher temps of summer hit the bloom production slowed down. Right now I have it in a big 16" plastic pot waiting to get my pergola leveled so I can plant it at one of the columns. Unfortunately, that may be next spring now. Trying to get my husband out to help me with anything is impossible anymore. If you like purples tho, and need a climber, I think it's going to be a really good one!

I have a swath of purple roses and other flowers to blend with "Purple Splash".... pictured here are Purple Splash, Ebb Tide and Intrique. --But I also have Night Owl and Stormy Weather mixed together nearby -- and despite their magenta / dark purple description, I've only seen sort of a dirty wine red in the 3 summers I've grown them. They're pleasant enough (and profuse!) but when contrasted with "true" purples, look pretty washed out. So I'm looking for a replacement climbing rose, one that might "play nice" with Purple Splash. Grateful for suggestions!

Most of the rose books I have suggest 2' from a wall as a rule of thumb, and it's worked for me. That clears the dryness by a foundation from eaves/gutters while leaving room for air circulation for the health of the rose & the appearance of the wall, and also prevents a build-up of fallen leaves & such against the house. Is the trellis you bought the wall model or the free-standing one? (Think the wall model comes with spacers so the trellis isn't flush against the wall. Looked at both myself online.) Found your earlier thread with ratdogheads' replies, http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/3144046/question-about-climbling-purple-splash?n=13 so it looks like the trellis size you've chosen should work once PS gets going.

Thanks, everyone for your answers. It looks like this trellis comes with hardware for a wall installation, but one reviewer on Wayfair said they painted two rebars and drove them into the ground, then used strong ties to attach the trellis to it. Glad to hear that 2' is not too far to plant the rose from the wall or trellis.

Hi again. So, my trellis is wall mounted and is 10" from the wall. I would rather have it even further away, but there is no gutter on the 2nd story roof, so I have to avoid the drip line (about 3' from the wall). I agree that more space would be better for air circulation for the rose, and for general maintenance of the wall, the climbing structure, and the rose itself.

I would love to see a picture once you have it up.

Since I've been contemplating trellis for an exterior stucco wall, find myself curious how far from the wall the spacers mount this trellis. This diagram shows 3":

Personally, I'd find that way too close for a rose. The 6" screw is likely 1/2 inch diameter for the 3/4 inch diameter spacer that just slides over it. For wall mounting you could use long lag bolts & slip pvc pipe over as illustrated here (where it's still too short but there is a photo) http://www.gardengatemagazine.com/54trellisattaching/ There are also trellis mounts similar to window box brackets, or using outdoor lumber with vinyl sleeves. For your brick & mortar wall, you'll need masonry appropriate fasteners & methods. Might be easier to mount it in the ground. Surprised the same design isn't offered as a ground mount.
