Help with identifying a rose please?

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum but hoping someone out there can help me. Many years ago when I was growing up my mother had a rose bush in her garden, a climber. It was a gorgeous plant, big heavy pink blooms, with a strong fragrance. It was filled with petals, like a double rose or a cabbage. It never really grew past one meter tall but it flowered over and over through the summer.

Sadly the rose bush was destroyed when workmen came to the house to put a fascia on the outside.

The rose meant a lot to my mother and I've never been able to definitively identify it. I was wondering if there is anyone out there who may know it. I only have a couple of photographs but they're not too bad.

I'm hoping to be able to go and get her another of this type of rose as it's very sentimental to the both of us.

I don't know it, but your pictures are great, so someone on here will be able to help. If you can answer the below, that would help too:

1) Where was the rose growing - state, region?

2) Can you guess approx what decade it was when it was first planted? (or the earliest you remember it, if you have no idea when it was planted).

3) Just for my curiosity, why do you call it a "climber" if it never got over 3 ft high?

Hi Jacqueline9CA. Thank you for replying to me! In answer to your questions:-

1) the rose was in Liverpool England

2) It was planted in the 1990s as we moved into that house in 93-4

3) I'm not sure to be honest. I think it may have been marketed as a climber. That's why we had the trellis for it. It may have been capable of growing higher but had limitations with the soil perhaps as we have a new climber there now which has only reached about the same height.

I was also going to guess 'Shailer's Provence'. While many different pass-along roses have been given the name 'Seven Sisters', the real thing is a large climbing Multiflora. :-) ~Christopher

Years ago I bought every odd and different rose I could find....I believe you have R. wichuriana poteriifolia, a very tiny variety of wichuriana that would be small enough for a window box. Glossy, wichuriana foliage and tiny, flexible, and very prickly stems. It has only small clusters or single blooms, no large panicles. It roots wherever it touches the ground. I lost mine in a move, but always enjoyed it as a ground cover. I don't recall it being over 3" off the ground...a very horizontal grower. It's really unique....check it out on helpmefind and see what you think. You'll need to look it up under its correct name, 'wichurana'. I still use the old name..... Bob

I think your roses are modern, so select 'Roses' to post your query. Heritage is a popular Austin rose that goes back to 1984. It is still readily available.

..I was just going to suggest 'Heritage' too... I bought it in 1987... it looks like an Austin English rose to me... and the height seems to fit in...

...I had a feeling the photos were from England Claire.... the pebble dashed property gave it away for me...

Thank you so much! I think that's definitely it. I wondered if it was an Austin rose to be honest. I've been searching for it for months now. Feel a bit ridiculous that it's taken so little time to find an answer on here.

LOL Marlorena, yeah the pebbledash does kind of have an english flair to it. That's gone now, the house has a brick facade surrounding it, which looks great but ultimately killed off our original rose. Lots of workmen and digging didn't agree with it.

I didn't know Heritage had a climbing sport, but it sure does. After looking at some of the pics I think you've found your rose. Definitely looks like Heritage and it was a very popular rose at the time so even more evidence supporting that it is in fact Heritage. It's still available from David Austin. Good for you.

I think it's genetically the same rose that can be grown either as a 6' shrub or a 10' climber in much of the USA. I've grown it both ways. The DA catalog often lists the same rose twice without a sport having occurred.
