Doorless Showers - Are taking showers cold?
Comments (22)We have been able to use the walk in shower in our new house for about 2 weeks now; our shower is about 3.5 feet by 6 feet, and the side wall doesn't go all the way to the ceiling - there is about a 1.5 foot gap at the top. Yes, it's cool - we don't get the steamy enclosure experience that we had from our enclosed shower stall at our old house. On the other hand, it's easy to clean without a shower door, and it makes life easier if you ever have physical challenges like a broken leg or major leg surgery. Oh - if you haven't decided on a shower head, I *really* recommend the shower heads on the sliding bar (what are those called?). Dh is taller than I am; the adjustable head allows for the difference in height. When you want to wash the shower stall, or wash a dog (whatever), remove the sprayer and get the water exactly where you want it....See MoreNeed advice-taking out tub replacing with shower
Comments (5)Hi Cassie, I am right there with you as far as removing a tub and putting in the same receptor. First if you don't have help you will need it for at least one step of the process. If the tub is cast iron you can bust it up into smaller pieces with a sledge hammer (eye and ear protection, of course). If you have a standard tub configuration then the receptor is made so you don't need to make any plumbing changes. If you currently have a right hand drain the positioning should be the same. Don't forget to order the drain as it doesn't come with it. I am looking at the same model (in Sea Salt) and just to let you know Kohler quoted that piece as weighing 193 pounds. So a few extra hands will be needed As far as the drain size goes I assume there is an adapter. Shower doors.... I have been searching for exactly what you describe and here is what I've found. Kohler has something pretty cool yet costly and I don't think it comes in the size we want. Look up K-705791 on their site. This is a bypass doe with fixed panels. This is another I found, its a company out of Canada, yet they claim its available in the US. Look here and I know you will really like it. Let me know if you have luck getting local info. http://www.kinetikhardware.com/ I hope it help and I would love to see your project and its completed look....See Moreopposed to required swimming / showers in School PE
Comments (66)In Junior High I had to take a shower with the group...no swimsuits, nothing and we had to drop our towel get in and get out. The idea that showering (in the group) promotes cleanliness is way off base as I experienced it...NO one even used soap. We were too intent on getting out clothes back on. And YES the gym teacher stood at the shower and made sure everyone got "wet"...in fact she had a clipboard to make off names as we went in. So, part of our grade was whether or not we "got wet." No one learned anything about being clean...in fact one girl in school smelled terrible every day, and the required "shower" didn't help at all. It was embarrassing to every one of us, and at the worse possible time in our lives, when our bodies were changing. We teach our children to say "NO" to anyone who makes them feel uncomfortable, yet some states still "require" showering in the nude with your classmates?!? For an example I once worked at a high end clothing store in Calif. where instead of individual dressing rooms, they had one big dressing room. Often when I took someone back to try on clothes, they were shocked and left (without buying anything) rather than take off their clothes in a 'group setting>" These were women who could keep their underwear on and they were still uncomfortable. So why wouldn't our children also be uncomfortable? I was and many student are too. Someone said it didn't "hurt" them...well, how do you know? How do you measure that? If it hurts one child, and it certainly looks like a lot more than one, why force something like nudity? I think children are vulnerable and easily influenced and most are also very self conscious. Once again it goes back to how you were raised and I think it's definitely a topic that requires individual views, but no one has the right (in my eyes) to force a child into being naked....See MoreSchool does laundry for kids who miss school due to dirty clothes
Comments (7)Many of the children in large urban schools in poverty areas live in substandard housing or shelters. Parents or in many cases aged grandparents are under immense pressures. Just getting a shower in a shelter can be difficult as facilities are often shared, broken or unsafe. Public housing, and almost every privately owned apartment building in NYC do not have washing machines in the apartment. Landlords forbid them and laundromats are expensive and take time. I have had a parent cry and tell me "thank you" when I sent home leftover party food. She had nothing at home. Both parents worked but rent came first. The sad thing was the school threw out tons of milk and food daily because it is against Federal law to feed anyone over 18 years of age. Schools are in the unfortunate place of having to mitigate all of societies problems that befall children. These same schools have neither the money or resources to support every problem, but if thinking outside the box and providing clean clothes reduces one stress for children and families and helps attendance rates, I applaud the effort. Schools that provide a multitude of service, including ESL, health, mental health, social service assistance within the school building can turn many, many families' lives around. However it is expensive and takes time. Society is often not willing to wait or pay. Sometimes it is hard to imagine other peoples stresses and we all have them, but some have more than others. I hope I haven't offended anyone but this is an area I know first hand and feel very strongly about....See MoreMongoCT
