Comments (16)A plastic Dobie scrubbing pad from the grocery Safe-n-Simple Finish with GARDZ per recommended spread rate, two coats if unsure you're a good enough painter to hit all the spots with 1 coat. Never use TSP. It requires flood rinsing - like only you can do outside. Typical water-based primers are all about PREPARING the surface so a new coat will stick OVER it. They are not about sealing in anything UNDER. In addition, water-based primer will reactivate glue residue. Think about how the glue was activated to stick in the first place? With water. A water based primer over the glue means you may as well not even bother priming. GARDZ does not reactivate remnants of residual glue rather it seals in any traces of residual glue. Safe-n-Simple and a plastic scrubby + elbow grease will get all that is possible to get off the walls leaving no damage behind. Did I mention you need to use GARDZ ? :) This post was edited by funcolors on Fri, Jan 31, 14 at 0:23...See MoreStripping Anaglypta Wallpaper
Comments (4)Do you know anybody with one of those European steam cleaners (Lady Bug, Tidyvap, etc.) That's what I use. Late-night infomercial-type steamers don't work. There are also some proprietary wall-paper stripper chemicals, but I've never used them. You might post over in the decorating forum, perhaps someone there will have a better suggestion....See MoreWallpaper stripping disaster! Help
Comments (10)Yes, I've been to the paint store and ordered my wallpaper from them after discussing our situation. Repairing plaster and trying to texturize the drywall to look like plaster is just more work than we are willing to do. And frankly, I am *in love* with the wallcovering we chose (a gorgeous faux plaster) so I am fine with not painting. I agree that the following statement, made by me in my OP indeed sounds like someone looking for a "quick fix": "How should I proceed? Should I just stop and size the whole thing and paper over this mess?" But, if I may make a small retraction - I was really only speaking of that one drywalled wall when I said I wondered if I should just paper over the "whole mess". Why keep fighting to take the paper off when it is stuck like glue and pulling the paper off the drywall. So - back to my orginal question. Can I wallpaper over the fuzzy backer paper that is leftover on the drywall (one layer from the paper liner on the drywall) if I size the whole wall? Is there any reason not to do this? (besides the fact that I should be painting these walls, in your opinion... LOL) Will the leftover backer paper prevent the new wallcovering from sticking? Will it bubble? Will it do something unsightly to the new paper??...See MoreEstimating time for wallpaper strip, plaster repair and paint
Comments (5)Three to four times the worst estimate you can think of as part-time DIY, even with MIL to watch the baby and wife working 10 hour days. 1 - You'll never know what is under the painted wallpaper until you remove it. I found gaping holes that had been covered over with old shoe boxes, then papered-over, then painted later. So I had to strip wallpaper, then patch plaster, and only then could I paint. 2 - Plaster repairs when wallpaper reveals cracks. You do NOT want plaster chips with lead paint falling where you have infants and toddlers, so the plaster has to be patched and primed. 3 - LEAD PAINT FUMES ... do NOT heat strip old painted trim unless you have full protective gear and excellent ventilation. Use the paste or gel strippers and scrape. (If your wife is breastfeeding, she should NOT be messing with lead-based paint!) 4 - Weird paint problems. Assume one coat of alcohol-based white shellac primer to seal in something. We found iron oxide paint (old-style barn paint) and calcimine (basically tinted whitewash). The first had to be sealed in because it bled through everything, the other had to be scrubbed off inch by inch so the next coat didn't peel off....See Moregreenlaker7
