Missing babies

Lorna Secunda

After a years absence a pair of bluebirds chose our nest of to create a nest about a month ago They built a nest, laid their first egg ( I then installed the snooker) laid 4 more eggs and about 8 days later two hatched Three eggs failed to hatch. The two babies were growing leaps and bounds. Yesterday evening I looked to check the box and the babies were gone. Mom and dad were throwing a fit and I can't for the life of me think what got them. This box is on a metal pole with a baffle about 2 feet from a fence. Could a squirrel have gotten them? I see no evidence of any babies at all, no feathers no bodies nothing, they are just gone. Not thrown out of the box or anything. I removed all evidence of the nest. Do you think it is too late for them to make another attempt? Or should I relocate the box as they were unsuccessful in this spot? A few years ago a pair lost their hatchlings here to house wrens, but I see no evidence of wrens
