In the island, as shown, is a disaster waiting to happen. If it's open it will block the traffic around the prep sink and trip the cook.

Where are you storing dishes? You could store them in drawers on the island, facing the clean-up sink. I'd keep the DW to the left of the sink.

Are you having seating at the island? If so, you might want to increase the overhang to 15".

If the person prepping is loading the island DW, I don't think there will be a conflict. I'd suggest DW, then (18"?) prep sink--that leaves 42" m/l for prep area. There would be room for an 18" trash pull-out, then the 24" deep dish drawers facing the clean-up sink.

This is the exact same set up I have in my kitchen. My dishwasher is the the left of the sink in the L. No dishes on the island. Blah!

The oven isn't labelled, it's a built-in beside the microwave/wine fridge

I would NOT put DW2 in the island. Totally in the way of the prep/cook zone.

I have 2 full-size DWs flanking my only sink. I use one for daily cleaning, the other one as a drying/dish rack (for my pots/pans/knives, plastics, etc) that have been hand washed.

When we have parties, I run both of them.

When I was designing my DWs layout, there are several threads that said to NOT separate them, because one wouldn't be used as much, or you forget what dishes were in which, etc.

My neighbor had a similar shape/layout to yours, but range on island, cleanup sink and DW1 at where your range is, and 2nd DW near her "bar" area (which is near your cleanup sink). She really complained about how it was basically like just having 1 DW because people wouldn't use the 2nd DW or she's forget what's in there, and there's the walking back and forth.

She wished that she had put them both next to main sink.

Your microwave area is perfect for snacks for the kids. Put a few bowls, plates, etc., there for their use, and keep the others in dish drawers on the island. With the seating as drawn, 36" dish drawers would be perfect, and you still have room for the 1" counter top overhang on the island. And if you choose to have DWs flanking the clean-up sink, if storing the dishes in the island drawers, you don't need to worry so much about having the DW within the 21" no-no zone, next to a perpendicular counter. NKBA guidelines #13.

Oops, I just realized that 36" wide dish drawers, on the end of the island, won't pull out more than 15" with the DW door fully open (mine opens to 27" from the cabinet face). DW to the right wouldn't have the same conflict with the wider drawers, and 24" dish drawers might just fit.

Just noticed the freezer placement--it that location still in consideration? ETA: Never mind, I saw your thread about the fridge/freezer placement. I'll try to pay more attention. ;)

Right. And if you don't have the second DW on the island, you can have wider dish drawers opening toward the range wall.

This is a picture of the kitchen in my previous home. If you were facing the sink, the dw was to the right (we had a wine fridge to the left), the glasses were stored in an upper cabinet to your right (this wouldn't have worked so well, but we had a drawer dishwasher then so it did), and the drawers behind you (in the island) housed silverware and dishes. The table was to your "northwest", behind where the picture taker is standing. This layout (done with the incredibly able assistance of a bunch of dedicated GWers) worked great.

if Yes, then, that's what I was trying to describe to Michael in the Fridge thread, about moving his freezer into the pantry, so that he can move the prep sink to where you had it.

Because I prep/cook between a sink and a cooktop, w/out having to drip anything between (if the prep sink is on the island, I would have to swing sliced raw pork loin from the island to the cooktop, possibly dripping on the floor).

Again, that's *MY* style of cooking.

Yes, that is a prep sink and it was much used!

trash (if only having 1) should go to the Right of the island prep sink.

You make the most trash prepping, unless you're used to prepping w/ a bowl (all unwanted stuff goes in the bowl, then into trash).

For me, I would put

- move prep sink over a bit, and put 18" trash/recycle pull-out to the LEFT of prep sink, near the MW/other people coming to throw things out in the trash, but still near where you prep.

- AND a 2nd smaller 18" pull-out under the 36" sink base.

Having trash near the MW is a good idea. I have a 12" trash pull-out, and it's sufficient, so if you have a second one under the clean-up sink, I'd put a 12" pull-out left of the prep sink, to maximize prep area on the right side.

If you have room for only one, and put the trash pull-out on the right side of the prep sink, it's close enough to be shared with clean-up.

The question about a 2nd DW is how do you intend to use it? My friends who had two DWs only used the 2nd one when entertaining/large parties. In that case it was only used after food prep was completed so it was not in the way in their island. Their other main DW was next to the sink like your layout.

As I think I said above, our dishwasher was to the right of the sink close to the corner. This wasn't a problem for loading and unloading the dishwasher, but it did make putting away the glasses (which were stored in the wall cabinets above that corner) more difficult (dishes were easy because they were in the island right across the aisle from the main sink). I think it might be annoying to have a second daily-use dishwasher apart from the cleanup sink and having to remember what went into which dishwasher.

^this. I've heard complaints here from folks who have had that kind of arrangement. Add to that, I think it would be annoying to have cleared the table, brought the dishes to the main sink, be loading them into the DW, then that DW is full, and then having to move all the rest of the dirty dishes en masse to the other DW location to continue filling. So much easier to have it all centered around the same location.
