What does the real seven sisters rose look like?
Comments (17)Kippy, it is generally agreed that it is Rosa multiflora platyphylla, as painted by Redouté, and as sold by the Antique Rose Emporium and Vintage Gardens. Of course countlessly many other roses get called by the name, so that it often just means "a rose whose name I don't happen to know at the moment." But this one seems to be the "real" thing. Comments (11)Well, we're FINALLY getting fall here in Northern CA. This is my neighbor's pistachio tree that has just begun to turn yellow the last couple days. Usually it starts turning by early October, and is nearly defoliated by this time. It's been a weird fall... And this is one of my Japanese maples. I don't ever remember it getting THIS red before! It's so cool!...See MoreWhat month does your garden look best???
Comments (24)As there is little frost in coastal Northern CA, we try to have our gardens look good year round. I depend on different evergreen shrubs with a variety of foliage colors and shapes, while the flowers come and go, producing bright bursts of vivid blooms to liven things up. This year May was spectacular because April was wet, cold and dreary, so the garden just exploded when the sun finally came out. Now that it's June, the roses (which bloom sporadically all year round) have really come into their glory. Least attractive months are December-January, when the colder temps pretty much stop everything from doing much, the deciduous trees are bare, and my cannas are sulking and looking decidedly tattered. There's a few roses and callas, but little else, so the evergreen shrubs really help. There's also something of a lull around late September when the dry summer heat takes its toll -- I water as little as possible -- and the garden is still colorful, but a little tired, awaiting a good hard rain which eventually shows up around late October....See MoreWhat do your flower bulb gardens look like?
Comments (23)Hello all - here are some of my bulb plantings from last spring, I've been planting bulbs and gardening for many years now. The first picture is of a double form of Actaea along my barn bank in front of daylilies that hide the dying narcissus foliage later in the season. The second pic is of mostly Carlton Daffs with some Beerheba and Thalia. Two years ago I dug up all of the overgrown clumps and spread them out in groups or "drifts." The third pic is of Barcelona Tulips along the front of my house - these bulbs surprised me and are four years old in this spot and have gotten better every year. Perennial tulips! The forth pic is my little Hyacinth hill with Sophie - my vole patrol. I've always loved hyacinths and their fragrance early in the spring but find them challenging to make them look "right" in the landscape. This fall I am planting 60 more hyacinths in this area to fill it up, the more the merrier. Plant bulbs in groups and plant as many of the same variety as you can in an area to make them really show up - and off! The great thing about bulbs is that they multiply and can be dug and divided up to move to new areas of your garden....See MoreSara-Ann Z6B OK
