Cucumbers skinny on vine end fat on bloom end?

I was asked a question today at work that I could not answer.

My co-worker said that all of his cucumbers on 3 plants are skinny on vine end fat on bloom end. He said they look like gourds. He said they taste OK, but he is wondering if he can fix it now or for next year.

I'm thinking it may be weather related? We have had very little rain and very high temps 90+. He has been watering but I'm pretty sure he's not doing a good soaking. He is a new gardener and wants them uniform for pickles. He didn't remember the exact variety that they were. He bought the plants at a big box and the were labeled as pickling cucumbers.

Any ideas? Could it be a nutrient problem?
