If I could do it all over again...
Comments (2)I've been amazed at how much heavy construction work my husband has been able to do on his tool house in mid afternoon. It's under a big oak tree, there's been a good breeze, and the humidity is relatively (for Alabama) low. The good news for people is the humidity is low. The bad news for plants is that the humidity is low. They're losing moisture about as fast through the leaves as they can absorb it through the roots....See MoreStarting all over again, need your help
Comments (10)I am a bit like yourself glaswegian Not always on the garden web forum but like to keep in touch some I remember seeing you on the Brugmansia Forum. To bad you could not bring plants from your garden I was fortunate on the occasion of my last move that I was able to bring quite a bit along But I found as well, that the plant sales of different horticultural groups and various fundraising plant sales found me with lots of inexpensive basic plants. Kind of nice isn't it to have a blank canvas. With your expertise in no time at all you will have marvellous gardens. Hope you are going to stay put for awhile Moving for sure is not just simple. There is a grower of Brugmansia in Quebec that my youngest daughter ordered plants from, but is to late I expect for this year You might even be able to simply drive to the Brugmansia grower in Quebec. Will look up the name of it if you are interested All the best...See MoreWANTED: Starting all over again
Comments (8)Hi There I am in Stoney Creek and am collecting a lot of seeds. I have cardinal climber and white cypress vines, 10 varieties of sunflowers, including a small variety with multiple heads called "paquito". I also have hyacinth bean, sweet peas (mixed colours) and purple and dark blue delphinium seeds. Double poppies and corn poppies and am intending to collect (but unsure how they will produce as yet) flying saucer morning glories. I have alot of the ordinary morning glories in purple and pink) and some chocolate morning glories. I also have thunbergia (orange) and have grown a blushing suzie - which is shades of red thunbergia, but still waiting for it to produce seed pods. I have red maltese cross. I do have all the latin names for these plants but my computer crashed and I lost the file so bear with me. Let me know if you would like any of these. Sally...See MoreDeja Vous all over again?
Comments (10)Thanks, everyone. They are, indeed, pipping. Boy, the weather was crazy last year. Cool spring last year, then hot in May and it never let up until October. It stayed dry all spring and summer, then we had floods in October. We usually have our first killing frost about November 15. It was Christmas. Now, we are 70/75 degree days and we're dry as a bone. I usually don't water anything in the winter, but I had to do it today. I moved all the fragrants, Squash Casserole and Liberty to the shade. My house faces north, so I don't have a good place to in the front to hide them. Thanks, Debra. Tiffany, I'm in DFW. Depending on who you ask, we are zone 7 or 8. I think 8 is more accurate to our heat, but ever once in a while, we get those really killer freezes. Then, they decide we are zone 7. Yes, I grow entirely in pots. How I knew it was rhizoctonia was that I sent a sample to Texas A&M plant disease and diagnostics. They suggested several fungicides. They didn't work. Finally I called the county agent and he said that I would likely lose most all of them. (He also told me to throw out the ones that were infected and don't try to save them. I didn't listen.) He said a few would not be susceptible. I have four survivors from the 100 or so potted hosta I had. They are So Sweet, Honey Bells, Blue Cadet and Blue Angel. I've added some more and have about 15 now, four of which came from a screwed up order last year and are not likely to flourish as they weren't the plants I ordered and may not do well in pots. bk...See More- 8 years ago
