Kumquat to trifoliate isn't hard. Sorry you had bad luck but you tried in the dead of winter.

Grafting kumquat, plus man many other citrus varieties, onto trifoliate (especially Flying Dragon) is very commonly done and is not considered difficult. - Silica

Pip you are almost right. I did all my grafting in spring and fall as stated when grafting to PT. Anyway If it is not a meiwa it is not a kumquat. My opinion. either way I wish you the best of luck on your grafting. I have had one success out of around 100 tries and that was a Giant Turnbull Pear to a seedling bradford pear rootstock done in late may.

The grafted bud has grown 3.5 feet from a 4 foot tree. At 7.5 feet it will have to grow another 5 feet to clear the underbrush to get good sun. This rootstock should push a 40 foot tree.

Cenntenial and nagami count too. And you tried in December not spring or fall like you claim. Here is a link to remind you.

In my neighborhood that was just before summer solstice. The daylight hours had reached 16 hours and the trees were growing very well. I did the graft on my PT with bark that slipped very well. The graft originally took and looked good but turned brown over the next month.

December is summer? Your Ohio neighborhood is that much different than my Michigan neighborhood? You have 16 hours of sun in winter?

Lie to yourself but the date on the forum tells the truth.

Again sorry your graft failed but kumquat is grafted to PT often, very often. Don't use your failure to scare off someone else. Their luck may be different.

The box above pictured duplicates summer hours . My trees have always grown better in the box than in the spring-summer sun. For me summer solstice occurs around December 21st. By the way I have hike the Appalachian trail and I can assure you that I get a heck of a lot more sun in the winter than you do as well as a lot more night in the summer.

Creekweb Go for it. You can do multiple grafts on the same tree each of a different type and keep the best 1 or more. It is however advisable to not mix kumquats with any other cultivars because kumquats grow much slower and would be over powered. Don' let any pessimistic people sway you from your endeavors. There are a lot of them around on this web.

You say you live in Ohio and you say dec is the summer solstice. How?

Summer solstice is inside my light box on December 21 when I give the plants their longest day. The trees have no idea what is happening outside and actually do much better during the cold season.
