Shawn roflmao. On Saturday I will have to haul everything back into the shed for 2 days since it gets below freezing and close to it. I don't mind. This way they can grow because they sure want to and harden off easier...so I hope. Did ONLY add more soil to the pots were the soil level had dropped 3 or more inches. For the rest, I WILL wait till all danger of frost is over. Cause I am NOT hauling even more big pots in the shed lol I wonder how cold a non hardy succulent can tolerate? Caren I put some rocks on the bottom to give it some weight. Then added succulent earth. Planted the plants and then added the little rocks and the sea shells. Is your garage heated? There aren't many succulents that will tolerate near freezing temperatures (40 F), and pretty much anything you could get into a shallow dish will die for certain if it freezes. As a general rule, no succulent is happy when the actual temperature drops below 40 F. Likewise, succulents are only happy when the average temperature is 50 F or above. Unfortunetaly, this prevents the vast majority of Americans from being able to grow succulents without a glasshouse. Hoenstly, zone 8 is where it starts to be a real challenge to keep plants going throughout the year. Even here in Los Angeles (Zone 10), I often get the impression that it is too cold for many of my plants. Having said all that, you could either put your dish in the garage if it is warm enough, bring it into the house, or just accept that you'll have to replace all of the plants each year. Finally, as pirate_girl established, excellent drainage is essential. It will be a a little tricky to get a nice succulent garden going so far up North, but it will be downright impossible if the soil isn't freely draining...

Sure! Use succulents that don't require bright light. Some that will grow with less light are Aeonium kiwi, senecio serpens, sedum makinoi 'ogon', crassula multicava and sedum palmeri, to name a few. You should be able to find a some with the contrasting colors you desire. You don't have your location, but the big box stores have little succulents for around $2, or if you know someone with succulents, you could get cuttings.
