speed queen cost per load

We've decided to go with speed queen (top load washer and gas dryer), but was just wondering since it is not rated energy star, how much more are we going to pay to do 2 loads of washing and drying per week?

There is no real easy way to answer that. However in terms of the washer, you are not talking about a lot.

Compared to a front loader, you could use 1-2000 more gallons of water per year…which averages $1.50 per 1000 gallons…so $3!

In terms of electricity…it varies GREATLY depending on when you use them, how you use them, how your water heater is step etc…but realistically you are probably MAX of $50/year more. And its probably more like half that number.

The dryer is tricky. Average cost per load is quoted as .15c to .30c per load normally…so assuming the other alternate is the BEST and speed queen is the WORST…you are talking about $15/year based on your usage.

The expense issue with appliances is whether their purchase cost (plus imputed interest on the cost over the appliance lifetime) divided by hours of operation before failure can get below the cost per hour of the electricity used when operating. One hopes, with the relatively industrial Speed Queen, that the washer will last long enough to achieve this. I think induction cook tops are iffy in this regard, but it is early yet. 1930's SO2-refrigerant "ice boxes" could manage this, but modern refrigerators may cost more than the power that they use in their lifetime.

Kenz5, I made the jump from a Speed Queen top load to a Speed Queen front load 8 years ago. My demographics: -I have four kids -did NOT change factory default water level on TLW -water is cheap where I live (Great Lakes region) -waste water is cheap to dispose of ($180 yearly flat fee regardless of usage) -natural gas is very low cost here and I have a gas water heater -I wash 95% - 98% of my loads warm wash and cold rinse I could not notice a change in utilities before vs after. It's probably $3 to $5 a month at most. Laundryvet

I am going to add my review to yours -- I have had the 432 model for a couple weeks now. I chose they 432 because I didn't really understand the difference between the 432 and the 542 but I did want the extra rinse option. Anyhow, the good... -The cycles are super fast. Every load of laundry I've done has been done in 30 minutes. Honestly, my dryer can hardly keep up with it! -Love that the lid does not lock. I like to take a peek and make sure I've added enough detergent and the water level is high enough. (not sure why it stops agitating -- I could watch my 10 year old Maytag wash the clothes). - It's simple. I wanted a machine that my 14 year old could use without getting into trouble. Now for the not so good... -Cycles are super fast -- but sometimes I wonder if it actually washed the clothes long enough. The rinse cycle is particularly short which some people may not like. -It does not fill to the top. This was not a problem until I put a set of king size sheets in there. Could have used more water. I used the reset feature to add more but the manual does warn against doing this (could cause the washer to overflow - not sure how). What I am unsure of: -Still not sure why it says to put detergent in the washer, then the clothes, then start. I like to dissolve my detergent in the water before adding clothes. Is there some reason I can't do this? - The Delicate cycle -- I only used it once and I wonder if there is something wrong. It barely agitates and spends most the cycle just sitting there soaking. Maybe its idea of delicate is not actually washing the clothes! Overall, I am pleased but I'd rather have my 10 year old Maytag still working and have $800 in my bank account!

You don't say whether your FP washer is a TL or FL. In my opinion and experience, having to buy ANY washer & dryer these days is a dilemma in itself. If you buy some Top Loaders you can have some control over the water level; otherwise, forget that with any and all Front Loaders. My Speed Queen FL (cost $1800) is built like a tank and works like a charm except for the water level (13.4 gal split between washing and rinsing!???). San Diego Steve will tell you that is plenty and he has even posted that he sold that model and bought the newer one which uses even less total water per wash cycle (11.xx gal I think). He and I are in complete disagreement on how 4 gal of water can rinse a set of King size sheets that remain in a wad. So FL vs TL is the first hurdle. I'm not sure how much water a SQ TL uses, but that would be my first question. My FL spins like crazy. I would have bought an FP but they are not sold anywhere in the Dallas, TX area. Maytag used to make a Centennial model which my daughter in law has and it has a deep rinse which fills the tub, but might no longer be made. Sorry not to have any more helpful information. The Chinese factor would scare me off as well with the FP. Good luck and please post your final decision with the outcome. It will be up to date and may help others.

Front Loaders are great machines, but they're not for everyone. Many of the "early adopters" in North America were disillusioned by machines that were fraught with problems (Maytag Neptune anyone?) ....... and of course the mold issue. Americans also do laundry differently than Europeans do. Research has shown that we like to do the bulk of our laundry on a single day as opposed to the European method of doing multiple loads throughout the week. Longer cycle times than top loaders make that more difficult. I also think we in the USA are somewhat resistant to change. Top loaders are still the preferred format as evidenced by the 75% of the market they hold. Manufacturers will have to get creative but as long as the demand is there, they won't be disappearing anytime soon.

I bought a Speed Queen 3/31. My water bills are no higher than they were before getting the SQ. I did not buy the dryer so can't speak to that. BTW i wash 10-12 loads a week.

I have a front loader SQ since 2012. SQ recommends HE detergent so I use Tide HE, carefully measuring to line 2 (no small feat with the liquid) and care to quantity of load. I've moved my gas water heater temp up a tad, as then the first water out of hot is warmer. Also wastes less water in general. I rarely select the extra rinse but do occasionally when I do a regular, not bulky, and big load of all whites with Tide HE at level 3, to ensure no residue.

the difference between an energy star unit and one that is not energy star can be as little as 1 cent.
An example would be if a product must consume 50 cents or less to get an energy star label this means a unit that uses 51 cents would not get an energy star rating.

I don't know how the energy star ratings work BUT it wouldn't surprise me if some of them are because the machine OFFERS A HOT WASH.
