What kind of loropetalum do I have?

I want to replace the lotopetalum that I lost to winter weather, but I cannot find the tag that came with the plant when I bought it, and which identifies the variety. I have one that survived and I want to buy the same variety. I'm certain I do not have a low-mounding variety, nor a very tall variety, as I bought the variety based on wanting it in the front of my house foundation and be visible in front of some laurels.

Is there a place online that would show the different leaves or other identifier? I've found random websites but nothing that shows all varieties in one place. I'm thinking I may have Purple Diamond.

I can travel to the nursery and ask there, but it is quite a distance from my home.

you could post a picture.. and get an id ... and then mail order it from anywhere ...

include pix of flowers .. leaves .. and the overall plant ...

try to avoid straight down pix ...

if we fail here.. try the name that plant forum

I have attached a close-up photo. The living plant is only about 18 inches high, as I planted it about a year ago. It had more height but I cut back some of the dead foliage from last winter. Without that cut-back it would be about two feet high. It's only about a foot wide at this point. It's not a red-blossomed or white-blossomed variety - I bought it for the pink blossoms.

Where in the world you are can be of tremendous assistance to some of us, although my soil is sand while my sisters soil (6 miles west of me) is clay. Usually sand atop a clay base indicates that someone dumped some sand there in an attempt to have a soil kind of easier to cultivate then the clay would be. The clay, under that sand, will keep that sand from draining properly, two different soil types with vastly different drainage capabilities. I would talk with the people at your local office of your state universities Cooperative Extension Service to find out what your soil type shoulld be.

It does look like a mint... but there are mints and there are mints. Catnip is a mint. Horehound is a mint. Gill-Over-the Ground is a mint. Plants in the mint family have a squared stem and have paired opposite leaves, as do your plants. A word of caution? If you plant different mints within reach of each other (10 to 20 feet), you will end up with common or wild mint, which has a mild, indistinguishable minty flavor. Mint propogates by sending out runners across or just beneath the surface of the ground, and will cross with any other mint within reach. I grow Spearmint and Peppermint plants in pots separated by about 12 feet of deck space. If your mint tastes like chewing gum or toothpaste, it COULD be Spearmint. Peppermint does have a bite to it - at least it does to me - and after chewing it for a minute or two tastes like peppermint stick candy. The flowers of Spearmint grow in a spike at the tips of the branches. Whichever you have, in order to maintain the flavor, try to get more of the same type of mint to plant with it. Why not dig up some of the plants and scatter them around the orchard? Have you tried cooking with it? Add it to salads or to Middle-Eastern dishes like Spanikopita or Moussaka, Greek soups or spinach dishes, spinach quiche, etc. You can also add it to your tea or just to boiling water or to lemonade for a refreshing drink that will also lower your body temperature by a few degrees. And be sure to dry some to use during the off-season. Hope that helps! - JB Hope that helps?

I use the Mr. Mister mop with BONA and microfiber cloths from Solutions. I have wood floors in every room except the bath and laundry. The mop is handy because I can put the BONA inside, but the head tends to flop around and you have to refold/change the cloth every so often. I find it easier to just get on my hands and knees unless I'm doing more than a couple of rooms at a time. I have never used it dry. I don't baby my floors, but those Solutions cloths are very *grabby*. I'd be afraid little rocks would get caught in the cloth and add more scratches to the floor. Before mopping, I use a regular old-fashioned dust mop to push everything out the front or back door. No kiddies here so I don't have to mop very often. I sweep or vacuum every few days and spot clean as necessary. I believe BONA is short for BONAKEMI. I purchase the big jug of floor cleaner from the Bona website. I also use it to clean wood furniture and cabinets - I haven't bought Pledge or Murphy or Endust or anything like that in ages. I could be paying way too much for the BONA. I've never comparison shopped it.

Misting succulents every week as a general advice is not very helpful -:( - not your fault but store employee. It needs to be in container with drainage holes (I can't tell if yours has them or not). It should be potted in fast draining mix - what I see looks like peat with very little perlite in it. Simple and better mix you can make is 50/50 mix of Cactus & Succulent soil and sifted/rinsed perlite. It should be watered when potting mix is almost completely dry - use bamboo skewer or chopstick to check it. It needs as much light as possible but should be acclimatized to it if it was in darker spot. This is what just about all succulents need.

Not sure. There are probably a dozen varieties out now that have new foliage like that. It might be helpful to know the overall form and size of an established (5 yr) plant. Some grow lower and spreading, some grow taller. It would also be helpful to have a photo of the flowers.

Purple Diamond is certainly a good guess though. Possibly EverRed. Both of those are not entirely hardy in zone 7a, so if yours died back, that might be what you have!

Thank you for the helpful feedback. I first noticed loropetalum because I'm longing for purple, maroon or dark red evergreen foliage in my landscaping. I first spotted it in Southern Living about three years ago (although there has been a more recent article). At that time I think I remember reading about three varieties. I think they were Purple Pixie (low), Purple Diamond (moderate height) and I don't remember the third one, nor can I find it on the magazine's website. I went looking for the Southern Living "purple" varieties at my nursery; that's why I think I have Purple Diamond.

I definitely agree that this shrub may not be hardy - nor evergreen - in zone 7a. But I'm going to replace the one that died and see what happens this coming winter. A neighbor's did not survive two winters ago.

I've got barberries and would appreciate any other ideas for evergreen purple/maroon foliage hardy to zone 7a. My barberries thrive but alas do not keep their foliage over the winter.

There are no purple/maroon evergreen shrubs hardy in zone 7a, unfortunately. Especially low-growing. I have ZhuZhou Fuschia Loropetalum and it is probably one of the hardiest of the Loros, BUT it's a more upright vigorous form. It has survived the last two winters with maybe 70% defoliation, but has come back each time. Can't say that for EverRed or Purple Diamond. I have removed both.

Nandina 'FirePower' turns reddish in the winter. Some PJM rhodies turn maroonish in the winter. Some ground cover perennials might give you a maroon in summer, such as Ajuga.

Or Beefsteak Plant (Perilla Frutescens), is a die back perennial you might like..
