What kind of microfibre mop do you have? How do I use it???

OK- Bought a microfibre mop from WalMart yesterday- and the cheapskate part of me chose the WalMart brand 'Great Value'- partly cuz it was a fair bit cheaper, and partly cuz there was only one Vileda Swiffer one and it appeared to be broken- there were a few other styles, but this one appeared to have the biggest mophead and it came in silver and blue (perfect for my kitchen- cuz that's also important! JK) Oh yeah, and it says Satisfaction Guaranteed- so I figure I have NOTHING to lose, if it's not great- I can take it back, and in the meantime, my floors can get cleaned.

So, my questions are:

What brands/style of microfibre cloth mops do you have that you love?

How do I use it? I tried it DRY on the parts of the floor not covered with cardboard, and it did pick up dust left behind by my vacuum cleaner, but as I lifted up the mophead, bits fell off- so how do I get it to the door to shake out? There were no replacement heads in stock- but obviously I'm going to need at least one maybe more. Oh- and I will have hardwood on most of the upstairs floors and laminate downstairs, so I forsee using this or one like it a LOT!

I noticed the BONA cleaner online at hugely varying prices- is BONAKEMI the same thing? Some prices appeared 10X more expensive than others? Am I missing something?

I have the Starfiber microfiber mop. I got it at a home show, but you can get it online. I use it with water - no other cleansers (though you can use cleansers too.) I absolutely love mine.

I use the Mr. Mister mop with BONA and microfiber cloths from Solutions.

I have wood floors in every room except the bath and laundry. The mop is handy because I can put the BONA inside, but the head tends to flop around and you have to refold/change the cloth every so often. I find it easier to just get on my hands and knees unless I'm doing more than a couple of rooms at a time. I have never used it dry. I don't baby my floors, but those Solutions cloths are very *grabby*. I'd be afraid little rocks would get caught in the cloth and add more scratches to the floor. Before mopping, I use a regular old-fashioned dust mop to push everything out the front or back door. No kiddies here so I don't have to mop very often. I sweep or vacuum every few days and spot clean as necessary.

I believe BONA is short for BONAKEMI. I purchase the big jug of floor cleaner from the Bona website. I also use it to clean wood furniture and cabinets - I haven't bought Pledge or Murphy or Endust or anything like that in ages. I could be paying way too much for the BONA. I've never comparison shopped it.

It does look like a mint... but there are mints and there are mints. Catnip is a mint. Horehound is a mint. Gill-Over-the Ground is a mint. Plants in the mint family have a squared stem and have paired opposite leaves, as do your plants. A word of caution? If you plant different mints within reach of each other (10 to 20 feet), you will end up with common or wild mint, which has a mild, indistinguishable minty flavor. Mint propogates by sending out runners across or just beneath the surface of the ground, and will cross with any other mint within reach. I grow Spearmint and Peppermint plants in pots separated by about 12 feet of deck space. If your mint tastes like chewing gum or toothpaste, it COULD be Spearmint. Peppermint does have a bite to it - at least it does to me - and after chewing it for a minute or two tastes like peppermint stick candy. The flowers of Spearmint grow in a spike at the tips of the branches. Whichever you have, in order to maintain the flavor, try to get more of the same type of mint to plant with it. Why not dig up some of the plants and scatter them around the orchard? Have you tried cooking with it? Add it to salads or to Middle-Eastern dishes like Spanikopita or Moussaka, Greek soups or spinach dishes, spinach quiche, etc. You can also add it to your tea or just to boiling water or to lemonade for a refreshing drink that will also lower your body temperature by a few degrees. What else... Rainfall. How much over the whole of the year, and when in the year. How much mist? How high are you above sea level? Does your property face the sun (South, for you) or are you shaded by hills, buildings, whatever, and don't see the sun until later in the day? Does the frost take it's time about melting, even when it's sunny? When is your first/last frost of significance (the one that terminates the tomatoes or mushies the young bean plants)? Is your soil acid, or alkaline or neutral? 6,5,4 is tending acid. 8,9 is tending alkaline. 6.5-7.5 is around the neutral range. You can buy a home test kit from your garden centre or farmers' supply depot. With maples and cherries, I'd guess at moderately acid - especially if you have pines and native rhododendrons in your woods/bush. How deep is the topsoil, and does it dry out over the summer? Do you have boggy patches in the woods, or is it mostly well-drained after the heavy rains? How dense are the roots in the area where you might want to have planting pockets for treasures? And what sort of shade??? Do the trees cast shadows sprinkled with patches of light on a sunny day? (Dappled light.) Or does it look as gloomy as a winter day when you go in on a summer's day? (Dense shade) Dry shade is the sort of thing you get on the north side of the house under the eaves. Rarely gets natural moisture. A useful zone for drying out bulbs over summer, but can be a gardening challenge. Hope that's helped a bit.

I think organization is at least as important as sheer storage space. Spread all your bathroom junk out on the floor or bed and pretend you're at a garage sale and that you have to 'buy' anything you want to keep (and not at a too-good-to-pass-ip price). If you don't care enough about it to buy it back now, then throw it away! TOSS those 10-year old lotions and potions! Failed make-up experiments? Throw 'em away! Perfumes and after shaves that aren't your style? Toss 'em! Curlers, straighteners and personal appliances that are no longer being used -- Goodwill 'em. The sheer volume of 'bathroom garbage' may dismay you; but you may also be pleasantly surprised by the 'good stuff' you rediscover simply by tossing the carp. Then sort and group the rest into baskets and bins that are just large enough for what's in them. Storage containers that can be stacked to fully utilize the vertical space will make the most of shelves, and see-through containers and big labels are wonderful! Then put the seldom-used stuff on the hard-to-reach shelves and the used-everyday stuff in the easiest-to-access areas. How much storage space do I have? One small medicine cabinet and an 18" wide by full-height closet. Between those two spaces, I have everything I use plus soap, shampoo, toothcare and deoderant for the entire family.

Misting succulents every week as a general advice is not very helpful -:( - not your fault but store employee. It needs to be in container with drainage holes (I can't tell if yours has them or not). It should be potted in fast draining mix - what I see looks like peat with very little perlite in it. Simple and better mix you can make is 50/50 mix of Cactus & Succulent soil and sifted/rinsed perlite. It should be watered when potting mix is almost completely dry - use bamboo skewer or chopstick to check it. It needs as much light as possible but should be acclimatized to it if it was in darker spot. This is what just about all succulents need.

Raehelen - I use the Sh-mop w/ the Bona and love them both - If I dry mop, I just keep the modhead on the floor and get creative as to how I drive it around the house! Oftentimes I would mop stuff into a pile and then use a dustbuster to suck it all up. The different prices in the Bona might be the different sizes? I remember some sites show the same size bottle but the descriptions would differ in how many ounces you're actually getting. Hope that helps!

We have a Bona mop from about 8 years ago. It came with terry cloth covers for the head, but ordered some micro fiber ones over the summer to replace those (they were falling apart). I use the Bona cleaner as well. Always have, and since we just re-finished the floors (and finished the new kitchen floor) with Bona Traffic, we know it's compatible.
