What kind of microfibre mop do you have? How do I use it???

OK- Bought a microfibre mop from WalMart yesterday- and the cheapskate part of me chose the WalMart brand 'Great Value'- partly cuz it was a fair bit cheaper, and partly cuz there was only one Vileda Swiffer one and it appeared to be broken- there were a few other styles, but this one appeared to have the biggest mophead and it came in silver and blue (perfect for my kitchen- cuz that's also important! JK) Oh yeah, and it says Satisfaction Guaranteed- so I figure I have NOTHING to lose, if it's not great- I can take it back, and in the meantime, my floors can get cleaned.

So, my questions are:

What brands/style of microfibre cloth mops do you have that you love?

How do I use it? I tried it DRY on the parts of the floor not covered with cardboard, and it did pick up dust left behind by my vacuum cleaner, but as I lifted up the mophead, bits fell off- so how do I get it to the door to shake out? There were no replacement heads in stock- but obviously I'm going to need at least one maybe more. Oh- and I will have hardwood on most of the upstairs floors and laminate downstairs, so I forsee using this or one like it a LOT!

I noticed the BONA cleaner online at hugely varying prices- is BONAKEMI the same thing? Some prices appeared 10X more expensive than others? Am I missing something?

I have the Starfiber microfiber mop. I got it at a home show, but you can get it online. I use it with water - no other cleansers (though you can use cleansers too.) I absolutely love mine.

I use the Mr. Mister mop with BONA and microfiber cloths from Solutions.

I have wood floors in every room except the bath and laundry. The mop is handy because I can put the BONA inside, but the head tends to flop around and you have to refold/change the cloth every so often. I find it easier to just get on my hands and knees unless I'm doing more than a couple of rooms at a time. I have never used it dry. I don't baby my floors, but those Solutions cloths are very *grabby*. I'd be afraid little rocks would get caught in the cloth and add more scratches to the floor. Before mopping, I use a regular old-fashioned dust mop to push everything out the front or back door. No kiddies here so I don't have to mop very often. I sweep or vacuum every few days and spot clean as necessary.

I believe BONA is short for BONAKEMI. I purchase the big jug of floor cleaner from the Bona website. I also use it to clean wood furniture and cabinets - I haven't bought Pledge or Murphy or Endust or anything like that in ages. I could be paying way too much for the BONA. I've never comparison shopped it.

Where in the world you are can be of tremendous assistance to some of us, although my soil is sand while my sisters soil (6 miles west of me) is clay. Usually sand atop a clay base indicates that someone dumped some sand there in an attempt to have a soil kind of easier to cultivate then the clay would be. The clay, under that sand, will keep that sand from draining properly, two different soil types with vastly different drainage capabilities. I would talk with the people at your local office of your state universities Cooperative Extension Service to find out what your soil type shoulld be.

Usually wet mops are bad. However, a thoroughly wrung out wet mop...not so much. Problem is what you might think is a thoroughly wrung out mop may not be wrung out enough to use on your wood floor. A thoroughly wrung out mop is one that will not leave any visible standing water on the surface. A damp mop will wipe the surface and remove dust, soil and food spillage. Hardwood finish manufacturers have designed those microfiber headed mops which you use with spray bottles as an alternative to string mops and similar devices. The spray bottle dispenses the right amount of cleaning solution and the microfiber cloth head of the mop picks up the resulting residue. The thinking there is to limit the chance of the user wetting the surface to the point where moisture seeps between the boards and damages the product. But you can get good results with other mops, but care must be taken not to wet the floor.

I use a microfiber cloth with Armstrong floor cleaner too now and then. Mostly, I have a hard floor steam cleaner that I use. It kills bacteria, cleans well and no chemical. The model I have is no longer available but there are quite a few others that works even better. Get one that is light to use. Mine is. Below is a link of the one I have. Christmas 2010 I bought myself a Roomba to clean our hard floors. My kids promptly named "him" Thomas. Thomas does an amazing job at cleaning our wood laminate--even getting all the kitty hair our two girls "deposit" that floats around and lands in corners and under things. Anyway, Thomas vacuums the floors while I do other things. I also have a plain ole Swiffer to do quick little turns on the floor. When Thomas is done zipping around, or when I feel like it ;), I clean the floor with spritzes of Glass Plus and a microfiber mop. When I want to vac the floors myself, I use my Shark Navigator Lift Away Pro. It easily transitions from rugs to floor, and then to carpet. Plus when you lift the canister off the vacuum head, it becomes a canister vacuum with different attachments. I love it!

Raehelen - I use the Sh-mop w/ the Bona and love them both - If I dry mop, I just keep the modhead on the floor and get creative as to how I drive it around the house! Oftentimes I would mop stuff into a pile and then use a dustbuster to suck it all up. The different prices in the Bona might be the different sizes? I remember some sites show the same size bottle but the descriptions would differ in how many ounces you're actually getting. Hope that helps!

We have a Bona mop from about 8 years ago. It came with terry cloth covers for the head, but ordered some micro fiber ones over the summer to replace those (they were falling apart). I use the Bona cleaner as well. Always have, and since we just re-finished the floors (and finished the new kitchen floor) with Bona Traffic, we know it's compatible.
