newbie in this forum...growing peppers but black spots on leaves?
Comments (7)I am sorry I should have specified what I am using... I am growing these in a fabric pot and I am using a commercial potting soil mixed with desert sand (it is red and they call it Sweet Sand here), and compost. I did not scoop up soil from the garden :) The website for these fabric pots (Smart Pots) says it is ok to use a heavier mix because moisture evaporates more than a plastic container would. I don't know if it makes a difference but I am using the same mix to grow tomatoes, zucchini, eggplants, and cucumbers and the tomatoes and zucchini are doing well (all are in Smart Pots as well)... the other ones are still young but seem to be doing fine so far. Lets see... just in case it makes a difference... the weather temperatures are a little bit erratic... the highs have been in the upper 70s to mid-80s and the lows have been from the lower 60s up to the mid 70s....See MoreBlack dots on tomatoe seedling leaves
Comments (11)Carolyn, anyone tell you your nuts? :) **** Actually no, no one has although I've been called several other things besides my name, which is Carolyn, not Dr. Carolyn.( wink) So to reward you with being the first to call me nuts I'd be pleased to send you two of my newest varieties not yet in circulation commercially, Anna Maria's Heart and Danko. The first is a lovely pink heart and the second is a medium red heart, both with wonderful taste, at least to my taste buds as well as the person who grew the plants for me ( and kept some at home) and the person who does my seed production for me now that I can't do that stuff anymore. Just send me your home address and the seeds are yours. ( smile) I spent some time looking at your photos and I'm beginning to think that the black dots are where the leaf hairs grow out of and if you look at the fringes of the leaves you'll see what you're calling crystals are really small white globes and they appear on the ends of the hairs that are forming. At least that's what I see. I'm not accustomed to being so up and close and personal with the enlarged leaf surface so it took some time to try and figure it out. The magnification is so large that I never would have seen such microstructure on my own with the unaided eye. Summary: I don't see a problem. Comments (17)Jean- I'll contact the extension service and see if they can tell me. Whatever it was stopped after I sprayed that dr. Earth organic pesticide on it. However, since I posted those pics have had an insurgence of Japanese beetles into my yard. While they have been primarily targeting my lilacs, spruce, and river birch trees, I have seen them eating my basil and peppers. I am pretty sure it was something different was originally eating the peppers in the pic above. as the Japanese beetles leave actual holes in the leaves- only the skeleton of the leaves remain....See MoreWhy are my pepper plants black?
Comments (14)Not all "fish fertilizers" are the same by any means. So what specifically did you use? What are the N-P-K ratings on it? What does the label say about frequency of application? As a general guideline when a pepper plant is that yellow, unless it is one of the varieties that are normally yellowish, then it is not normal and something is clearly wrong. If that cause is lack of nutrients then yes, more frequent feeding may well be needed. Dave...See Moreesox07 (4b) Wisconsin
