I think you have answered your own question. It looks like overwarering. Is it planted in regular potting soil? Sux like a well-drained mix, such as gritty mix.

I suggest repotting in gritty mix. While doing that you can check to see if the roots are rotting. After you repot it don't water right away. Let it dry out. If the roots are rotted you may need to root some leaf cuttings that are still healthy or remove the healthy part of the head of the plant and root it.

Hopefully it will survive with some care. Good luck! (BTW, I can share because I very recently had the same problem. It happens. Part of the learning curve.)

Also It has a baby one of its self growing off the side so I'm not sure about clipping it until I know its species

It is difficult to ID plant in bad condition. It may be sempervivum or something else. Is the baby on long thin stem?
It is badly overwatered and if you take care of it immediately it may survive. At least the baby?

If the plant had some problems when you got it, they got much worse.

Take it out, get off all the soil around the roots. If any roots are black-mushy-smelly, cut them off. Rinse well from all the gunk and put on few sheets of newspaper or kitchen towels to dry out. Keep out of sun at this point. Damaged leaves will fall off, they can't heal.

Baby may or may not make it - again, it depends on it's condition. Let us see how it looks like to get better tips (close-up photo would help).

It would be good idea to put your zone and/or general location next to your name, it may be helpful to give better advice.

Yes the baby is on a long thin stem I'll get more pics as soon as I get it out of this soil, I have lava and decorative rocks would it be better to use that instead of the soil? or is mixing them in ok?

I'm in growing zone 6 - Germany where its been in the 90s the last few days. The poor baby fell off while I was holding it to remove the soil along with a few leaves :(. But the roots looked/smelled fine. Really earthy no mildew I can spot a few looked a little yellow but definitely still healthy, I wasn't able to completely clean them its more mature than I originally thought.

I believe your right about it being a Sempervivum I found a species it looked almost identical too called the houseleek

It seems to be peat around the roots, you could get more off if you swish it in lukewarm water.

Was it in full sun immediately after bringing home? - I suspect that besides being overwatered it has some sunburn too.

When placing plants from shady locations into full sun, they should be acclimatized - first, keep in dappled shade, after few days move int more sunny and so on.

Let it sit out of any soil for a day or 2 to dry out, it will survive dry conditions better than wet. I don't know size of lava or rocks you have but they may be too large to mix. It would be better to get some grit about size of aquarium gravel. Mixed with little soil it will work. Decorative rocks are good to support newly planted plant and for decorating-usually too large for a potting mix.

Baby should be just stuck into potting mix.

FYI You can check with wiser folks than me, but be careful with baby. Some here have told me "no roots, no water". I wouldn't water until you find out.

Yes I put it right into the sun :/ now my husband won't quit with the jokes I only had it about a week but I think it'll make a good come back, I'm not so confident in the baby though maybe if I'd pulled it a few days ago. I have the momma sitting in a rock gravel so's not to damage the leaves any further by setting it on the side, and the baby is inside for the next few days at least. Does any one have a good resource for me? I was trying to find the species through Daves garden with no luck but now that I know I'm sure it would be more helpful.

Houseleek, hens and chicks, liveforever - those are common names for the same plants.
Sempervivum is the genus and there is about (?) 40 species...and many, many cultivars (like well over 1000? more?)
What kind of resource are you looking for: general care? ID? or?
Sometimes it is difficult to ID plant if in poor condition (the size of leaves of plant, the color and so on may not be true) - we struggle to ID many in great condition.
Just about all of them need same care: good light exposure and well draining substrate.

The baby should be planted, while immature it may make it? Also, less we fuss about them better they do - at least for me :)

Are you saying that your mother plant is outside? If so, she'll need dappled sunlight. Full sun may be too much for the time being.

I'm not very good at IDs either, but try googling images of Sempervivum, "Hens and Chicks". Then you can start your search by finding what looks like it and researching pecific plants that it could be.

As someone already said, though, it won't be certain while it's in poor condition. It's tough even when they're in good condition. Some species can only be told apart after they flower!

You will do well taking care of it by researching Sempervivum. I don't think the general care of the family will differ greatly. Yours is likely a relatively common variety.

Until then just have some fun! Succulents really can be pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Just don't overwater and you're pretty much set. There are other things to help your plants really flourish, but if you remember that you'll keep them alive and healthy while you learn more.

These plants grow so commonly here where I'm from (Tenerife) that people consider them weeds!

These grow all over the roofs of houses here and all along the cliff edges with sun exposure. It's funny because we're all here discussing soil and water and these guys apparently flourish with full sun normally around 28C (up to 35+C!) and next to no water! (No one waters them on the roofs, and the only thing they get is an occasional light rain. I've inspected some of the places that they grow and it's incredible... The ones on the roofing grow between the tiles where the only 'soil' they have is packed dust from the roof and the air and the ones growing in the mountains are always squished into little crevices in a sheer rock face...

Some people around here have picked them and potted them but for sure, they appear to do much better in their natural conditions than in a pot.

My advice is that, yes, you've overwatered it wayyyyy too much (the leaves going mushy). This plant has rather waxy leaves to protect against the sun and stop too much water escaping. Don't worry about under watering it. Honestly, it will do better in really dry conditions. I have one similar I plucked from the mountain recently and I've put it basically in a bed of stones (with a bit of soil and other gritty stuff) and put it in full sunlight. Trying to replicate the place where I picked it from and I just watered it when I first put it in and haven't since and it appears just fine!

Lilbit- I agree with you, Rina is Awesome!

Luna- Take heed to what chefmomster told you: "No Roots, No Water." Use that as a rule of thumb with most succulents. Why? because the stem or rosette would have nothing to take in water. It would sit in wet soil and rot.

Becci6 is telling us that we should try as closely as possible to provide our succulents with the same growing conditions they would get in their natural environment. That is something we should all strive to do.

Knowing the weather conditions in your local area will help decide where you place your plants. For example, Sempervivums in my area of southern California can be grown outdoors all year long. there are others such as Lilbit and Rina that live in a much colder climate than me that would not be able to do that (unless of course you have your own private greenhouse like Lilbit (congrats!)). Most likely they bring their plants indoors or at least cover them to shield them from intense cold.

Even where I am..i usually see them thrive outside when they're planted under or beside a larger plant or tree to shield them from intense sun. I have seen many that have gotten fried by they sun. If they're getting intense sunlight for too many hours each day, I would give them some shade.

We are now entering the middle of July and I have watered mine only 3 times so far this year. I stop watering in November and continue again in April. You may not be able to use my watering regimen so again, get to know your local area weather and what would work best for your plants.

One "correction" if I may...
Sempervivums are hardy, many to z3 and I have read even colder - that I don't know.

I don't keep any indoors. And even said that I would not buy semps if I didn't have any outdoor space. Perhaps even upset someone when I suggested that maybe they should give semp to a friend with outdoors and get more suitable succulent to keep inside.

I lived in Europe for 20 years - we grew them outdoors year round.

I lived in Canada in warmer zone (perhaps 6-6a?) and now in 5a. Winter temps are well below 0F for extended periods of time, and we have snow for months. Sempervivums live...

That is why I preach keep them outdoors year-round.

I understand that they don't do as well in hot and humid climates and I see them 'rated' up to zone 9 - I don't have personal experience with hot climate :)

They don't like to be waterlogged - as most plants. If I was to plant them outdoors in spot with poor drainage, that would kill them definitely during winter - as it would kill many, many plants - and even in other seasons.

Occasionally, some refer to Echeverias as hens and chicks. These are not hardy, lowest I have seen them rated was z8.

I should add that there is a difference in how the zones are defined in Canada and the US. There is slight difference in temps for same zone number, but it is quite small.

So if plant is rated z5 in US, I grow it just the same...

Here are few photos of semps just after spending winter outdoors, in containers. They look just a little ratty, I usually take off dried up leaves and they grow and flower and multiply until winter comes again. I have posted photos of these same plants many times 'in season' and don't want to repeat...

No I kept them both inside especially since its going to be rainy the next few days, the roots on momma dried up super quick but no more water until they're doing okay in the sun again. Really glad to hear they can last the winter too, that sounds a little colder than we've had the last 2 years Rina. Thank you all so much for your seasoned advice, N00b here from WA state where not much water means only once a day lol ;) but you guys are AWESOME and I hope I can share some good news soon.
