Comments (1)I used to sell the net style PVC non-skid rug underlayment. It should be available at your local home center, maybe even Walmart, etc. When you say quality rug underlay, then I think of synthetic fiber and that would be available at a speciality rug dealer (the kind of store that sells hand made rugs). We were always told the PVC style underlayment was just as good. I have written many times on this site that I am a fan of Smartstrand carpet by Mohawk available in Mohawk's Horizon and Aladdin lines - you should at least check them out. I have Horizon Atlantic Shores and love it. Soft carpet is a big deal these days and every manufacturer offers this. Do some shopping and narrow down what you like and let us know....See MoreArea Rug Pad questions and sources

Comments (6)First do not use rubber backed or latex backed rugs or pads as they can stick and ruin the finish of poly finished floors. The newer the floor finish the more likely they will cause damage. Glad this rug is not latex. If the runners move around even a little bit they can wear down and scratch the finish, if not the wood of your floor. And the rugs will last longer if they have a pad. I would be more concerned that the ends of the rug are not laying flat, that is a huge trip hazard. The rug may have flattened out. And I like the runner, I bet it makes your art work pop....See MoreCork underlayment for rug or rug pad
Comments (8)Thanks Jan, and points taken. The house is not an open concept barn, it's a 1958 home with doors to every room (even the kitchen), but hardwood floors throughout and large windows. Sound really seems to carry between the two floors. The rugs we've added so far have helped. We will just keep adding more as the budget allows. I would still appreciate any advice on whether it's feasible to lay down cork underlayment as an area rug. I really need a runner for a long upstairs hallway that's 15' x 4', with a couple of jogs. Decor isn't really important in that space, just sound absorption. Cutting pieces from a roll of cork would be much easier than piecing together area rugs to cover the 3 different sections. The hallway connects all of the bedrooms, and the stairwell funnels downstairs noise straight up to the hallway and bedrooms....See MoreOutsidePlaying
