Comments (1)I used to sell the net style PVC non-skid rug underlayment. It should be available at your local home center, maybe even Walmart, etc. When you say quality rug underlay, then I think of synthetic fiber and that would be available at a speciality rug dealer (the kind of store that sells hand made rugs). We were always told the PVC style underlayment was just as good. I have written many times on this site that I am a fan of Smartstrand carpet by Mohawk available in Mohawk's Horizon and Aladdin lines - you should at least check them out. I have Horizon Atlantic Shores and love it. Soft carpet is a big deal these days and every manufacturer offers this. Do some shopping and narrow down what you like and let us know....See Moretotally confused about rug pads! help?
Comments (7)We use both felt and the dura-hold pads. The all felt pads are my favorite for large, heavy rugs but it seems the carpet dealers no longer carry them. The dura-hold pads works really well on both w/w carpet and hardwood or tile floors. I've only had problems with one that buckled, or stretched, in one area but I solved the problem by cutting a wedge out of the stretched area and taping it back together. I think you'll find your rug will look and feel better in addition to lasting longer. Allison's link shows 3 nice pads....See MoreWho has used Jade Industries' "OptiMat Rug Pad" for area rugs?
Comments (1)I've had trouble sourcing Optimat as well. We used Allied industries to get it in our area, and shipments were sporadic and terrible. I've switched to a different kind of padding that I find to be better quality from a different company. You can try searching the brand name "DuraHold" as well. If you need some help finding rug pad, please feel free to reach out. We're happy to help you! Comments (8)Thanks Jan, and points taken. The house is not an open concept barn, it's a 1958 home with doors to every room (even the kitchen), but hardwood floors throughout and large windows. Sound really seems to carry between the two floors. The rugs we've added so far have helped. We will just keep adding more as the budget allows. I would still appreciate any advice on whether it's feasible to lay down cork underlayment as an area rug. I really need a runner for a long upstairs hallway that's 15' x 4', with a couple of jogs. Decor isn't really important in that space, just sound absorption. Cutting pieces from a roll of cork would be much easier than piecing together area rugs to cover the 3 different sections. The hallway connects all of the bedrooms, and the stairwell funnels downstairs noise straight up to the hallway and bedrooms....See MoreRelated Professionals
