Fathers day gift of a gas trimmer what do I need to know?
Comments (8)I know I would not mind if I were the dad in your situation to be taken to the store and told to pick out the trimmer I wanted. I would ask how much is set aside and go from there. If that is not possible than a certificate saying pick a trimmer of your choice and let's buy it today. Some possibilities to avoid the dreaded "that is not the one I wanted" scenario" :). All good questions above. Price will determine alot. I think the best all around trimmer/brushcutters are in the $3-400 range with $400 being high. You can get a really nice trimmer in the $200 range though. It is really a question of what exactly is needed and how much you want to spend. Your dad may have a preference for makers. I personally like the Stihl and Echo for ease of availability. The Kawasaki's I know nothing about and I stay away from currentl Homelite products although the older Homelite equipment was really good from what I have read. How old or how to spot them I don't know. I prefer straight shaft and a good harness. Cutting heads can be a personal preference. I like the bump and go, some like the quick insert and some like the fixed plastic blades. At the 3-400 price level, I am not concerned about the 2 vs 4-mix debate. The 4-mix's are young but have good reviews so far. Your dad could probably do okay with a good consumer grade trimmer with a flexible shaft. A solid shaft will be more expensive but will better handle brushcutting. I don't have much need for attachments but they make the units more expensive. I did the "cost analysis" of those models and it seemed that they did not pay for themselves until you bought 3 useful attachments. I could see the mini-tiller but an edger was really not necessary for me. A pole saw, maybe. Just little things that I could not really get alot of use from. All really good questions. Alot of the answers will be personal preference. Best of luck with getting your dad to smile on his bday....See MoreBest gifts for your girlfriend or wife

Comments (43)I had a couple of holiday surprise guests too--at noon, with the gathering scheduled to start at 2 pm, my son asked if it was ok for his ex-girlfriend to come! They split quite awhile ago (he broke up with her) but I knew they were still reasonably cordial. I'm not sure exactly what the status of their relationship is now but I have always liked that girl so it was nice to see her. And my daughter asked if a close friend could come. Friend is a Jewish vegan so it was a little challenge for me to ensure there was food she could eat. It all worked out and I am so glad I always have a few gift items on hand. Gave ex-girlfriend a Godiva chocolate bar sampler and a nice candle. Daughter's friend got an iTunes gift card and a joke book of the world's worst album covers (she and my daughter are both into the indie rock scene here). They both seemed to have a great time. Son and ex(??) went home to her place together, and my daughter's friend told her afterward 'Christmas is fun-I might have to find a Christian boy to marry!' :). Comments (22)Thank you again everyone - this gives me even more to work on. As for the jewelry - I think it's so interesting that a circle pin was mentioned twice - I was given one when I graduated and I still have it. She'll be wearing lots of suits and a simple, classic pin just might work well. Maybe a circle pin with tiny pearls or even a stick pin. I had thought of a Waterford paperweight - they have a star one and I could have it engraved and include a note saying something about 'a rising young star in the legal profession' - and since she's graduating at the top of her class I wouldn't be exaggerating. If I give her a silver frame I could even print one of the photos they've sent me of the two of them and place that inside. I hadn't thought of the school's gift shop - I can check out their web site or phone them. And that's a good idea too about the cookbook and the tea set. I'll have to ask my son if she drinks tea - but what makes this idea interesting is that a year ago she couldn't cook. Her idea of a meal was scrambled eggs and grilled cheese. My son has worked in restaurants and he's always making meals for his friends and now she's learning her way around the kitchen too. Thanks again everyone - I feel much better about a gift now. I'm going to write down these ideas and put them in the box with all of my greeting cards. That way I can refer to it the next time I find myself worrying about a gift....See Morerina_Ontario,Canada 5a
