french antique replica armoire on CL ?
Comments (9)I spent a lot of time searching for a french armoire, and looked at many antique as well as reproduction pieces. The repros in that style ranged in price from $1,200-$3,500 (although some went much higher). Most of the repros did not have an identifiable manufacturer--they seemed to be frequently produced in places like Malaysia and then imported by small boutique type retailers. It's a very lovely armoire, but I'd ask questions about when/where they purchased it, how much they paid, whether it's solid cherry, and if any paperwork is available. Then check the structure carefully and look for signs of shoddy workmanship (lots of glue, etc). I ended up getting an antique french armoire (very early 19th century probably) on CL for about what they're asking for the repro. I will admit that I was incredibly lucky--I've priced similar ones for much higher. Here's a link to a site I found featuring some lovely repro french antique pieces. Good Luck! Comments (6)sue: this may sound either tacky or bizarre to you, but to solve the "running out of toilet paper just when you really need it most" problem, we simply installed 2 toilet paper holders side by side on the wall. They're pretty ones. And we're well disciplined so that as soon as one runs out we replace it (actually we cycle them, moving the one that's been sitting on the wall over to the right hand position on the wall, where we pull it from. Would it be apropos to say 'Call me anal' at this point?) We love the system so much that we're replicating it in every bath in the new house. I'm really stuck on my planning the bath cabinetry, BTW. My little guest bath (shared by me) has only a 30" x 22" sink base and the wall behind it and to its side for all the storage space for that bath. No linen closet in the bath, but one outside. I need all my potions and stuff in there, tidy enough for guests too. All the books and photos are of big baths. (Of course.) I'm fortunate to have a local cabinet shop to build what I want; just gotta design it. The uppers are the real stumper. Trying to overdo it probably. I'm a storage hog. I'd like to wrap the side wall and rear wall at that vanity with shallow cabinets!...See Moreremember my cool cl chairs that i reupholstered? i found a friend
Comments (18)purrus, fascinating...you have found one of the few areas in the country, I suspect, where older upper-middle-class artifacts don't get snatched up immediately. I thought to myself when I asked that I wouldn't then plan a trip to your area, but now that you say you found the Heywood-Wakefield for $70...I didn't think that was possible anymore. Would pay for the flight in itself :) (JUST KIDDING--don't worry, your sources are safe from me!) Seriously, if I were you, though, I'd be looking on this as a time to jump at these deals, large and small (not nec. all furniture -- look in the glass, ceramics, art sections too). You've found a special area at a special time and you are doing the background work to deserve it. Go for it and amass a bit of an inventory! There's one website composed solely of what two guys bought in one storage unit (or something like that) -- turned out to be thousands upon thousands of dollars of Murano lamps. A rather comfy financial-cushion-maker. Imagine if they'd turned the purchase down. So go for it and and then share pics of it with us, of course :)...See MoreFound a similar chair on my CL. . .
Comments (9)Those pics are not really grabbing me, but at that price it might be worth a look-see, if it's not too far away. It's not exactly a bergere (closed arms) or fauteuil (open arms) chair the way it is done with the buttons. It looks more upholstered with an attached back cushion and less exposed wood carving. The wood carving and curved lines where the upholstery meets the wood are what makes these chairs IMHO. Squirel mentioned my chairs--they are by Baker and even used I paid much more (but did not reupholster as the condition and fabric were very good). Here is mine for comparision: If I were in the market for one of these chairs, I'd pay less attention to the upholstery as you can always reupholster, but look for something with good lines and/or exposed carved wood. Mine were really a stroke of luck (matched set of 2 chairs each with it's own ottoman), though I often see single bergere style chairs on my own CL in the $100-$200 price range. Sometimes you can find them at estate sales--as I found mine....See More- 8 years ago
