It's amazing how long seed can stay viable in the garden

Years ago I had Shasta daisies in my flower bed. For reasons I won't go into now I removed them from that bed. 3 years later Shasta daisies showed up in that bed right near where they had grown before. There were no other Shasta Daisies anywhere near that bed so I assumed the seed had lain dormant until it was ready to sprout.

I had a beautiful dark purple and white Columbine in a small bed beside my greenhouse. Every spring cabbage worms would eat all the foliage unless I got them first. With everything going on in spring I would often forget to check until they had decimated the plant. I was sorry to lose it but I dug it out and replaced it with a day lily 3 years ago. This year I found 4 small plants growing on the edge of that small bed. This time it didn't go to waste because my son claimed the plants. Now it's blooming it's lovely head off in my son's garden.

I was struck by the fact that seeds could stay so long in the ground and still sprout and grow when the time was right
