Possums are ruining my life!

Hi everyone,

I've come to the slow and disappointing realization that the two things I love growing - edible plants/fruit trees and heritage roses - are just not going to be possible in our backyard, unless I essentially enclose the whole yard. I've tried a whole bunch of "possum repellants", none of which have done anything. They have eaten the leaves and bark off my Mango, all the new growth off my Feijoa, peach/pear/plum leaves, my whole passionfruit vine etc etc etc.

I'm trying to compile a list of plants and trees that will survive the invaders, like Brugmansia, Agapanthus etc. I've also heard jasmine, camellias, gardenias, lavender and hydrangeas are safe choices. Can anyone add to this list?

I have some tropical fruit trees - black sapote, jaboticaba and grumichama - does anyone know if possums like these? They haven't been eaten yet but they aren't very tall. I don't mind netting the trees when they are fruiting but I can't net them all year round to stop the leaves from getting continuously eaten. Strangely they didn't eat my raspberries, I think they have a strong preference to only eat things they can reach from the fence.

This is a very disheartening problem - any advice appreciated!!
