Retrievals

My computer crashed and I lost all of my pictures and contacts information. I have heard that there is a program that can be installed to retrieve such things. Have you had any experience with this? Also what software is recommended to accomplish this kind of task?

I'm so sorry. What a dreadful experience! The fear of such an occurrence is what spurred me on to set up a removable backup system with Western Digitals "My Passport Ultra" some time ago. That plus having to reload my own system from scratch at 3:00 AM several years ago when Mother Nature caused the same problem you've just experienced.

This program...linked below and ready for installation...used to be touted quite often here [with numerous accolades] regarding the problem you're experiencing. However...I, personally, have never used it so I can't attest to it's success or thoroughness. Piriform is trustworthy site and I doubt they would offer anything harmful to their followers/users.

It is my own fault for not backing up. I purchased an external drive about 8 months ago to use for backups of the computer and just never installed it - no excuse at all. Of course, now I have it installed, but there is very little to backup. I have used Piriform's Crap Cleaner and was always impressed with it. Will take a look at what you have linked. Thanks, Anne.

I can't find my log-in information judiegal made for me so I'll post under her name again. squirrelheaven, Savannah's appetite isn't bad she just doesn't like her food anymore. She still wants everyone elses food and treats. She's actually in the middle of getting her food changed over to the Wellness Core. She loves the Core and eats her old food just because it's mixed in with it. Her poops are good and firm which is a good sign. You're right about loose stools being common with food changes. When I read reviews of foods so many people quit on a good food because they think it's making their pets sick. Some people even leave bad reviews because it smells bad! I opted for a two week changeover for my dogs and they're both fine. I've been letting Savannah outside to run around and she has a ball. She runs and rolls in the grass, and when no one's looking she sneaks into the pool. When you go to check on her you can see foot prints leaving the pool and her rolling on the grass. I check on her frequently to make sure she's fine, she can get in and out of the pool easily but you never know. We do have a pool alarm that's been in its box for a while now, I might set it up. I'm trying to find a good vitamin/supplement to give her, something like an everyday senior multi-vitamin. Does anyone know of any good brands or products? She's doing well with the fish oil and co-q 10. I don't know if just a regular petco vitamin will do. I'm also looking for more natural flea and tick products. Thanks everyone. I'll try and get signed on with own account and give my input on other posts.

Oftentimes though the managers will decide upon a metric for "measuring performance" because it is something that is easy to measure, irrespective of whether what they are measuring in any way correlates with good or bad performance. My brother started working as a programmer at IBM during the 5th year of a three year project to redesign the air traffic control system. The idiot managers decided to implement a lines-of-code-written metric to measure the performance of the programmers. He found multiple sections of nearly duplicate code, and created a single function that performed the same actions, and then replaced each of the duplicate sections with a single line calling the new function with the differences abstracted out as parameters passed to the new function. He removed thousands of lines of code making the result easier to understand and easier to maintain which anyone who understood even the first thing about computer programming would deem to be the right approach. Instead the manager summoned my brother to his office for an official reprimand since his lines-of-code-written for the week was several thousand negative. The next week my brother decided that for every line of code he wrote, he would add carriage returns at every location allowed by the syntax of the language he was writing in, making each line count as 2, 3, 4, 5 or more lines of code written as measured by the metric. His manager included this increase in productivity by a member of his group in his report to his manager as an indicator of his management acumen. So while I've never been subjected to a environment that used a method "measuring performance" that was that demeaning, wrong-headed and actually counter-productive, I do find "accountability" stressful because it often will result in someone with only the vaguest idea of what I do deciding that work "meets expectations". Meanwhile the managers never direct their measures of accountability at themselves, and preside over one failed project after another, seemingly without the slightest cognizance that their management decisions (or lack thereof), directly led to the project failing. Whether it is failing to define the requirements for what the project should accomplish, or technology decisions they mandate without any rational justifications, or sub-contracting out a portion of the project, paying large a large sum of money to these external developers, and then when the money is exhausted and the project they've created is a non-functional mess, saddling us with the mess and expecting us to bring it to completion and maintain and extend it thereafter -- even when told that it would be easier, quicker, and better to discard the mess and start from scratch.

You might try beating some more egg whites and then folding in your batter. Here is Dad's recipe from his and Mom's 1946 Better Homes and Garden's cookbook: Angel cake 1 cup cake flour 3/4 cup sugar 1 3/4 cup egg whites 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tarter 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Sift flour with 3/4 cup sugar four times. Beat egg whites with salt until frothy; add cream of tarter and beat until stiff, but not dry. Add remaining 3/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time. folding in throughly. Add vanilla extract with last addition of sugar. Sift flour mixture over the top, a little at a time, and fold in lightly with a down-up-over motion. Bake in 10 inch ungreased angel cake pan at 325* for 75 minutes. Invert pan to cool.

You're not the only one who finds Houzz a chore to navigate! If you look at the very top right hand side of the page you will see "Your Houzz". Click on it and your home page will come up. Under the banner with your name on it, in small print, it says Ideabook, Orders, MESSAGES and Activity. Click on the Messages and they should come up.

It very much depends on what you mean by "crashed." "Crashed" typically is defined as a sudden shut down of the computer, either due to hardware or software. That doesn't necessarily mean the computer is permanently broken or that the contents of your hard disk drive are inaccessible. If, for example, the motherboard failed the hard disk drive can usually be easily moved to another machine where data on the drive will be accessible. Even the in worst case, which would be the physical failure of your hard disk drive, the data is generally still available. Unfortunately, it generally means professional and expensive data retrieval.

Maybe you can tell us what's going on with your computer and we can take it from there.

Yeh, what Mike says . . . will the computer turn on ? Or it turns on, but there's nothing left on the disk.

What you're talking about though, if the partitions and files on the drive seem lost, is "Recovery".

A classic program for recovering files is TeskDisk, but if you're not used to dealing with partitions, command line, and so on you'd probably find it challenging. It's very powerful and I've had good luck with it.

But tell us more what's going on - I bet it's not that bad.

ps : Are you in Walnut Creek, CA ? Because I'm in San Francisco - could probably talk you through it.

Downloaded recuva and it ran for hours, but did not retrieve my pictures. I just gave up on every getting them back. Then, today, what a surprise.

I am still loading software and getting the computer back to the condition it was in, as much as I am able to do so. I have also used Picasa for many years, so downloaded that and lo and behold, it started loading all of my pictures and scanned documents. Who would've thought that would happen, not me for sure. I am a happy camper right now.

Hallelujah! Thank you sooo much for reporting back about the success. Now we all have a history marker for Recuva. I hope I never need it...but it's great to know it does the job it advertises to do. What a nice feeling!!!
