Is anyone growing Munstead Wood?
Comments (13)I have not taken full bush shots of mine yet - but will make sure I do it this year - Seing pics of full plants is much needed on HMF too ...but if you search online you can see a good specimen of Munstead Wood - On this Italian blog - it gives you a good idea of the size. See link below. In this picture - I think there are 3-5 plants together: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j--D3jEUDX8/TqwCh2KN5gI/AAAAAAAACGI/r2TRFEi8xfA/s1600/Munstead+Wood+in+border.jpg Earlier Austins became almost 2-3 times bigger plants in most parts of USA -than here in cool Northern Europe. In California I have seen the puny Tradescant become a fence climber .. - but the newer introductions - have a much nicer growth habit - and does not seem to grow that much bigger - only time and experience will teach us. I think we all have been amazed seeing Olgas - Abraham Darby - Hoovbs Evelyn sigh ...and Jeri's Golden Celebration In sunnier, warmer, southern parts of Europe some Austins becomes spectacular: Take a look at these: Pat Austin: http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/CC_Schnuppe/?action=view&current=pataustinphoto.jpg Shropshire Lad http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/CC_Schnuppe/?action=view&current=aslphoto.jpg I would not have room for many of those ._) Here is a link that might be useful: Munstead Wood...See MoreMunstead Wood, Darcey Bussell, or WS2000?
Comments (10)I mostly agree with nik, although I know the least about Darcey since I do not personally grow it. To me one big difference would be whether I want a taller and very wide rose (WS2000--about 4 ft tall and 5-6 ft wide) or a shorter more upright rose (Munstead and perhaps Darcey). WS2000 sometimes has a somewhat awkward outstretch, a bit rigid and stiff--no grace of form at all. But those purple-red blooms! William Shakespeare 2000 (last year) I wish my WS2000 bloomed/re-bloomed more, but I'd guess mine is planted in too much shade and that is holding it back. (Haven't got any open spot to move it to.) For me the main attraction of Munstead is the most gorgeous dark purple/red blooms--and seems to bloom/rebloom at a very good pace. Here is a bloom from last year. In contrast, Darcey is more of a red--no dark purply undertones. None of them are disease-magnets when it comes to blackspot, but WS2000 can need an occasional spray. So far in two years time, Munstead has not needed to be sprayed for blackspot though it did get it on a few leaves that I just plucked off the bush. Don't know how well Darcey handles BS. My first advice echoes Nik's: Get them all. Three wonderful Austins. But if you have to choose, I'm nuts about Munstead and would always pick it first. Unless, for design reasons, I really really needed a straight red bloom with no hint of purple--in which case I'd get Darcey. Kate...See MoreFalstaff vs. Munstead Wood vs. The Dark Lady
Comments (27)Yes, I like both of mine, also Sheila, but for different spots. MW is nearer the front of border whereas Falstaff is hidden behind the yuccas resting against balustrades. I only see his gorgeous flowers. They are not as frequent as MW, but memorable and last on the bush. Both are quite fragrant to my nose, but MW is the thornier by far. Falstaff is definitely lankier and can be grown as a climber of sorts. DarceyB is a frequent bloomer with moderately fragrant blooms of a less full nature most of the time. She's a lovely colour that blends well, but a notorious BSer who will defoliate at the mere mention of the word. Both of mine are hidden so I only see their flowers. If I ever find a substitute I'll move them elsewhere along with Milano. If I could be assure that Flameco Rosita wouldn't get too huge I'd plant her in their place. Carol, wasn't MW a dud for you in the end?...See MoreMunstead Wood bush size
Comments (7)JUst lost my post!!!! Both great choices, but I agree, without that purple, I'm not sure how Lavaglut would look in front of New Dawn. I want the Dr. Huey colour. The MB looks perfect in some pics where it's more crimson. The size is great. I found when researching another pretty one: Route 66, but I think it's also too big. There are just too many roses. :) This border backs up to grass so no worries there. It's also between 66" and 84" deep. Thank you all. Keep it coming!...See More- 8 years ago
