Quick Fire OR Angel Blush?????
Comments (10)Hi Stillwelljill - Sorry for not checking in right away - 'got a bit busy w/ grandkids. I'll be glad to let you know how quickly QF changes outfit ... she has not, as yet, opened her clusters, just getting larger & fuller. Actually, I do keep progress notes on my small H collection, particularly this season due to unusually long Winter & very strange/devastating Spring, here in IA. I was warned early on, by our local nurseryman to expect our dependable perennial bloomers to be 1 to 2 weeks late. All of my paniculatas are in full/sun sites & seem to love where they are. QF is planted right next to Little L ... I too am anxious to see how she opens up & how long her changes take to the mature-stage-color. LL just started showing her first, couple of tiny bud-clusters ... it's amazing tho, how very quickly LL will fill w/ buds once she starts! I agree that QF was quite upright last season - I'm curious how she handles all the blossoms once they all open. I think that the site you describe will be just perfect - since you said that the nursery is having a good sale & you have space for both ... need I say more!!! LOL - BTW have you checked the thread I started on AB, about a month ago? Silvergold posted her photo ... I know that AB is her favorite! Good luck & I promise to keep you posted on QF!...See MoreFire and Ice VS Little Quick Fire
Comments (14)Thank you. I don't really care about fall color personally. The long cones of things like strawberry sundae I don't find attractive as I rather prefer the domed shape of Annabelle if she just wasn't so aggressive to take over real estate even after I thought I removed her. I also saw one photo that had a row of fire and ice and they looked a very blah shade of pink/beige and the florets were spaced far apart to make the scene all the worse.. Perhaps it was just a moment between two attractive colors, but it made me wonder what others have experienced. I look forward to any photos....See Moremy successful hydrangeas
Comments (9)H Hi FADI - there are probably many ways to handle it, but I have always cut my Annabelles in the fall to about 8" tall - whether this is the absolute correct thing to do, I'm not sure but my Annabelles are fabulous every year. I don't do it in the Spring since I hate to trample around my wet soil....See MoreFire and Ice hydrangea
Comments (16)"I've pruned my QF in fall and Spring (in hopes to maintain advertised size) and it won't bloom. This is a PROBLEM." The problem might not be related to the variety of the plant at all- more likely something cultural. The monster Quickfire I posted above has been pruned in the spring, pruned in the fall, and pruned in the summer. Last year I distinctly remember taking off some of the lower portion to increase the light for the poor unfortunate plants under it, and I recall it because I remember thinking about the loss of buds. It still bloomed plenty. I had planned on taking that one way back this spring but life got away from me. Next year for sure. And just a note regarding the phrase "advertised size"- plants grow. They grow forever. They don't stop at some pre-determined height and just exist at that size forever. Size estimates like that are generally acknowledged to be a ten year estimate only, and local conditions will influence that growth. It's never an exact science. I'd suggest one of the many, many smaller and/or dwarf paniculatas- there are so many to choose from it's a shame to keep trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. Don't be afraid to toss it. I just gave up on a nearly ten year old plant of another variety that I had struggled with for years to get to perform enough to earn it's spot in my yard. It failed. It's now gone and I'm enjoying something else in it's place- something that shows me it appreciates my care. I expect gratitude!...See MoreNHBabs z4b-5a NH
