Hi Ohiofem, I was wondering, since you have been growing clivia for some time now what you would recommend as a very good or possibly the best yellow. I'm interested in saturated color of course, but don't want an overly huge plant. And of course the wider the leaves the better..and of course.. a nice good size flower head..(I don't want much do I.) I see that there are San Marcos yellows availible here and there as full grown plants and then there is Arturo's yellow, and I'm going to google Solomone yellow right now.. I'm sure there are many gorgeous yellows, but one that I might be able to find to purchase in the not too distant future.. I hesitate to buy a full grown plant as I promised my husband these wouldn't get very big (he believed me;-)) so if I start out small as with the seedlings I can sort of edge myself into this without making too much of a splash..if you know what I mean.. I appreciate your advice and anyone else who might have any thoughts or comments would be appreciated too.. Thanks in advance, Donna

I've wanted a clivia for years, but never found any locally and tried to get some seeds or plants on trade here in the exchange section with no luck. But recently I stumbled upon a clump of plants in a planting at work and grabbed two purple pods off a plant (yesterday). I'm now obsessing over getting them to grow and am reading through all the threads I can find. I hope to one day have the luck you have with your orange plant(s). They're Gorgeous!! If you ever find a need to... ahem... thin them out... :)

Tom, the seeds were purchased from e bay. I've purchased a total of 3 times with no distinct difference in appearance either time. The first two times I sowed in soil on the window sill. The first time around I had about 80 % success, the second time about 40 % success with ultimately 100 % demise due to my own lack of careful attention, and the third time, well, I'm still waiting on them to show me their stuff. I've never had one from the plant itself, until now. Ours went into bloom (interestingly enough the bloom opened the day our 14 year old Sheltie passed over) in February. I self pollinated and got just one seed pod. It is still shiny and green and looks just about the way it did once it formed, no different. I'll let you know what happens as it progresses. I'm making sure to keep up weakly weekly feeding the plant since I'm assuming the seed needs nutrition. Your zip loc bag technique is what many use for Clivia seeds too. I also really enjoy starting from seed, there's just something very satisfying to watching the plant from birth and knowing that you nurtured it (or at the least, you accompanied mother nature on her little journey).

Larry, I've had my clivia for 25 yrs and it generally always bloomed in the spring...UNTIL...we moved to a place where I could summer it outdoors. Now it blooms off and on throughout the summer...sometimes. There was one or 2 times (when it was indoors) that it bloomed in the late fall. Oh, and there was once that it had a yellow flower but the flower was deformed.
