NEWBIES: stay out of your garden
Comments (186)There are some serious concerns about soil compaction that should not be fluffed off quite so lightly! It damages soil structure, which is then difficult to repair. And impaired soil structure can and does impact plant growth by restricting root development and access to nutrients, water and oxygen, which are much harder to access in compacted soils. It doesn't take much to create soil compaction...certainly does not require a backhoe!! Walking or standing on saturated or wet soils will do it, as will merely cultivating wet soils. The effects of soil compaction are more easily seen in lawns, in the form of routinely used pathways, which tend to be of a slightly lower grade and marked by weakened, halfhearted or even nonexistent lawn growth along those paths. You can tell if your soil is compacted by analyzing the weed growth there :-) Some weeds tend to be very adaptable to compacted soil and and their presence is a good indicator you have compaction issues: plantains, dandelions, chickweed, ground ivy/creeping Charlie, knotweeds and creeping buttercup can all indicate soil compaction....See MoreQuiet out there
Comments (9)LOL* at you on the extra care comment, Westelle:) I found that out 3 years ago, I wanted to know then why his retirement should affect what I do and how much busier I was while he says he's bored. Sorry about the allergies, that makes it really tough to go outside and do anything. The dr told me once that you can develop a new allergy at any time to anything. That was especially neat after we'd been living in the mtns for a couple of years and developed an allergy to oak and pine dust:) Pat, I'm sorry you've been banned from the garden. I hope it'll end up being temporary. Yes, at least you can take care of your inside plants. Will the kids help you take care of what you do have going on outside? I hope they figure this out soon for you on your feet. That's got to be painful. I got your email add, thanks:) Brenda, I think I have that weed too, I was thinking it was a relative to a stinging nettle when I went to pull one a month ago and it hurt! Same kind of thing, I keep forgetting that exact spot and keep going after that weed there with bare fingers trying to keep up with all the weeds. Tricky bugger. I'm really sorry you're not doing so hot Pat and retirement is work and you don't feel really good either Westelle. I got over the dr's latest bright idea and trying to get back to how I maintain best:) Did go to Indian Casino in Lemoore today, I have a W-2 to claim for this year now. But, we now have the money to go on vacation for our anniversary next month. And I have the credit cards paid off again:) Still hoping to see some of this forecasted rain down here, no sign yet. How is it where you are?...See MoreDoes this look like HVX?
Comments (19)Hi Moccasin, When I first looked at the picture I had the same thought as Buckeye - it looks like a virus, but not exactly HVX, so probably some other virus. Yes, there are a lot of plant viruses that hostas can get I'm afraid, its just that HVX is the most common one found. And Buckeye is an expert on this, so I would trust his judgement. About the other ones, those are all fast new growth that hasn't completely colored up, even the Purple Heart. Though the leaves on Purple Heart do have signs similar to "ink bleed", that isn't the way it will look with a virus. When you have virus ink bleed, the part that is bleeding out from the veins will be the wrong color. In this case, the correct color radiating out from the veins is dark green, which is the exact color the leaf is supposed to be. If it was a lighter color radiating out with the correct color between the veins, then you have a problem. But as the season goes on the leaves pictured above will color up normally. Hope that helps a little more. Chris...See MoreDoes right to 'quiet and peaceful enjoyment' extend to phone?
Comments (13)Yeah bud, you are right - but it's not like I'm making different versions of my story, just sorting things out with all of your help. You have absolutely helped figure this out. I really thought he lived here before we did - it hadn't occurred to me at that point that it might be tied to a different address. For some reason, in my mind it was like the phone number was assigned to the phone jacks in this exact apartment in which we live (lame I know)...and not to the person or business itself. It seemed to click in my mind when I read your first post - when you said "Are you SURE the calls you are getting are for the former tenent and not someone else who had the same number?" I looked again in the online directories after reading that post (found all those sites originally by googling our current phone number) and noticed that you could click an additional link to get the address and a map - and all the listings for that number had the same address, which is amazingly close to our apartments - and the listing is for the guy for whom these people are asking when they call. So, I no longer think he lived in our exact apartment and whether he lived in the same complex to be so close to work, or not- it definitely looks like this is his old number and it got reassigned to us like bud said. Since we have no idea whether this guy is going to update his number on all those sites even though he has been advised he is missing multiple calls each day, I really like the idea of just turning off the ringer and recording what talley sue said as a new outgoing message. Thanks talley sue, really ! Bud thank you too - I can for sure admit I am sort of a ditz. . ....See MoreBabka NorCal 9b
