Sealing old asphalt driveway: pros and cons

Hi everyone,

We are trying to repair our home that is under construction. Our driveway has been stained by either our older vehicles or by the various contractor trucks that have come and gone through the reno/addition project. There are two very large and dark oil or other car fluid spills on the driveway. When we had our driveway done 15 years ago, the driveway contractor told us "never seal it as the driveway needs to breathe". So we have never sealed it. Many of our neighbours have. The sealing of course makes their driveways darker, but their driveways seem to crack more as a result.

What has been your experience with driveway sealing? Should we be investigating cleaning up the big stains, or sealing over them (perhaps need to do both for seal to adhere). If we are to seal it, what kind of sealing process should I be searching for. Are there better ways to seal a driveway? We are not considering a DIY type product you can buy at HD, but a company that offers a higher quality product or procedure that you can't get from rolling on the sealer yourself (assuming there is a difference of course).
