Companion roses for Lady of Shallot, Belinda's ....

Hello all,

I have a large front yard area I am planting with landscape application-type roses.

I want to plant a grouping of a floribunda or bush type rose which will have good curb appeal.

It will be directly next to a grouping of Lady of Shallot, Belinda's Dream is next.

Directly in front of that is apricot and peach Drift roses.

In the same large bed, but not anywhere near, I have groupings of Love & Peace, Molineux, and Fragrant Cloud.

These are all spaced apart between a variety of perennials so the color range registers as fairly harmonious.

I definitely want something vibrant so it pops from a distance and don't have my heart set on any particular color. It doesn't need be be fragrant, but would like the roses to be good for vase cutting, floriferous with big fat blooms would be my preference.

No knockouts or singles, Otherwise I'm wide open!

In case it doesn't show my zone. I am in 7b in Atlanta, GA so it's hot, humid and lots of BS here. Area is full sun.

Would love your suggestions!

I'm right up the road a little and I know what you mean about GA. heat & humidity. Munstead Wood would be a good start. L.D. Braithwaite is a bright red. Neither one of these burn in the section of the garden they are in. All day full blast sun. Charisma is a bright spot in the garden everyone see's right away. I also like Hot Cocoa but for our area it must be on fortuniana root stock. Own root and all other rootstocks don't do this florabunda justice. In the summer heat it's blooms are a bright burnt orange and when the weather cools off a little they turn into a nice shade of terracotta. A plus for this rose is it stays in beautiful foliage from top to the ground. That should be a good start.

Thanks for the advice about size. I had estimated before, something I'm just terrible at, because I didn't want to go outside in the cold. The space is 40' long and the one (6-8 yr. old) Limelight I have is about 6.5'. I do prune it in the fall to keep it from encroaching on what is currently planted in the same bed. The space available between this one and the next hydrangea is a full 14.5', not 8' so nearly double. I've been thinking I could put a single Munstead Wood before the mature hydrangea. This is a smaller space and I've heard MW grows lower (is this correct?) so I thought it would be a nice beginning. The next section would be LofS, a hydrangea and then another grouping of roses finished with a hydrangea. I am hoping to find a rose with a similar growth habit and complementary color to grow on he other side of LofS. My ideas have been all over the place. Carding Mill, A Shropshire Lad, Abraham Darby, Jude the Obscure. Any you'd avoid outright? Any that won't be the right shape? I'm hoping they're bushier rather than tall and leggy. The Golden Celebration I have started out bushier but a cane was broken off early on and I've had trouble with 'octopus arms' every since.

Alameda, I am visualizing your color combo. It seems as though it is very striking! I like the Munstead Wood lavender but I have not seen it available here; our summers could be too hot and dry. I am usually fairly adept with colors, sometimes to the extreme. My big issue is the lack of knowledge of the availability of plants matching the colors in my head. Belinda' Dream, as I have not seen her in person appears to be a little different in coloration (photos) and. how it the color will play out once it is in my soil and dealing with the heat????? Kippythe hippy I am expecting the Belinda's Dream to encompass the better part of the 8' in width (horizontal) that I have in the rectangle and be quite larger than my icebergs. There's not much in terms of a winter dormancy here so the growing season is long, and there are a lot of blue skies and sun. Rose bushes become large. I love what I call an orderly but informal garden. I like symmetry, balance, but also plants that spill over walls, into walkways etc., roses that nod, things that trail . Debbie1776, I really like the look of Russian Sage. I have been researching this plant to determine its requirements and an image showing what a mature version of it looks like. That's a nice selection of roses! Henry Duelberg salvia planted alternately in a rose border comes to mind,. It gets tall so don't plant too close or it will shade the rose foliage. Although it's not native I planted garlic chives in my rose beds. The spiky foliage and white flowers looks great with roses and is reported to deter spider mites.. Even prettier is society garlic with its lavender flowers. Also nice with roses is the spiky foliage of irises as well as their stately flowers in spring. Back to natives Black foot daisies look good as an edging, but plant away from the base of rose canes since it takes less water. A native that didn't work for me was Greg's mistflower. It's a beautiful butterfly attracting plant, but tends to take over an area and is a mess to clean out under thorny canes when it dies back in winter. Plus you want to leave room to scratch in fertilizer under the rose bushes. You'll be getting more ideas I'm sure. Let us know later what worked for you. Happy gardening!

Lady of shallot is next to jude and Princess Alexandra of Kent. Compared to their shape (more of a rounded shrub) LOS is like a vase and throws the whole bed off. I guess I am spoiled! But I agree with MAD and others that it is a slow grower and mostly only green. I think the extra harsh treatment with the pruners this spring helped both with more fullness at the base and buds. So Lily circling back to your original question, I would cut it back after it blooms. and here is Darcy bussell next to Los Pardon the bright harsh glare of the high desert sun. Alice

Howdy Neighbor, I had Charisma and I liked it, but it died in the polar vortex. Ken's suggestions are great, he is an expert. I think going with a darker color rose to compliment the rest of the roses is a good idea. Munstead Wood is great, I have it on Dr. Huey, still in a pot. The color was very intense the first flush, but with this heat we have had the second flush was a bit lighter. I also love Playboy (another one I had that unfortunately was blown over by a storm and didn't survive, but I fully intend to get another one). It's a 'single' but the color can be intense.

K&M Roses and Cool Roses sell roses grafted on fortuniana. I have my first fortuniana grafted roses this year, so far they are doing well and seem to like this heat! They are the only ones still blooming like crazy. The real test will be this first winter, if they survive. They will require some winter protection at least the first year or two.
