Mushroom ID anyone?

Today during my morning walk I saw a lot of mushrooms sprouting under a giant oak tree in my local park. Just curious to know their names. Here are some pictures:

Interesting photos. The first one (red top, cracked from age) looks like a russula. Russia is a large genus and there are several with red tops.

The second one with the warty too is interesting and I certainly would like to know its name. (There are mushroom forums online, btw.) I believe I've photos of this one.

The forth and last one is a type of bolete or suillus, a mature one. Note the spongy underside. Boletus is a large genus and many are edible, and some not. Some of them many be edible (in prime condition), but are not particularly good.

Fungi are always interesting and photogenic. I used to hunt and collect wild mushrooms. Of course one has to be very careful and informed. There are many look (sorta) a-likes. There are also some that are easy to identify and worth getting out the pan -- B. edulis, for example.

In many areas there are mushroom societies that make forays to gather fungi, ID them and exchange information and expertise.

yes.. go local if interested in eating what you find ... find a local pro ./.

my local library just hosted a local hunter ... i didnt go ...

i have lots of the red ones under my oaks ...

Braken Fern can be harvested when the head is tightly cured. With two fingers slowly sweep upwards with slight pressure when it will snap over. Must have everything ready before you start. Pick a nice sunny day that will dry the greens. If you have enough(about 2-3lbs),get a pot a boiling water and blanch for about a minute,turning once. Scoop out of boiling water and lay it outside in thin layer to dry.Hot braken will dry very fast.Turn in every 2-hours to dry completly. When it is dried, Soak in water for few hours and changing water each times. About 2-3 times. Rince gently. Can be stir fried. or in soups. Tasted like mushroom with a slight meat overtones. Lot of work which I would not bother unless I have large quantity. Worth the labor. One of my favorite dried greens. Soaking takes all the toxicity away. My mom stir fries with olive oil and lots of garic and little bit soy sauce and salt.

DUH! If I hadn't jumped the gun, would have realized that info is right there in your post. You can tell a redneck if.... ;) Hmmm Wonder if they'd go in colder climate. I am trying to create a woodland landscape, so any mosses, mushrooms, etc interests me. I'm driving my hubby nuts, dragging home mossy logs and rocks, and all the things I took for granted when I lived in Tennessee. Moved to Michigan, and not even one tree on 10 acres. Its been a struggle, but I'm getting there...

The orangish cap with pores and a mottled stem makes it sound like a bolete mushroom to me. I've never actually collected or eaten these in the US though (only chanterelles here and other mushroom types, including boletes, in Finland), so I can't say what species it is. Look at a guide to edible boletes in your area, and you might be able to find out what it is.

Thanks starsplitter and ken_adrian. No intention of eating though. The park sees a ton of dog walkers every day and this patch is right off the walkway. I'm quite sure the dogs contribute generously to the fertility of that area

Was just curious as I'm always trying to familiarize myself with native flora and fauna.
