Key West Morning Glory/ Man in the Ground?
Comments (10)Thanks, everyone. That's an interesting theory, sultry. Makes as much sense as anything. Thanks very much for the suggestion, juneroses. I'll certainly ask over there. Hi, Silvia. Thanks for your suggestions, and gorgeous pics, as always. Yes, I know both of those, but the Key West morning glory has very small dark blue flowers about the size of a quarter. (I don't know why they call it skyblue vine when the flowers are much darker than that--maybe it's lighter in the wild depending on soil conditions.) It's a FL native from extreme southern FL. I was surprised to see it growing so happily up here, but the house where it looked best was right on the river so I doubt they ever have any kind of hard freeze. They also had a lot of mamey and other tropical fruits that can be a bit tricky up here. Even at the other house which was growing it, which was fairly near the water but in what tends to be a slight cold pocket, it was not nearly as dramatic, although still very pretty. I know it can grow in PB county, but in the wild it never even grew as far north as Broward, mostly southern Dade, Collier, Monroe. Much smaller plant in all ways than either of those--leaves are smaller, too....See MoreKey West Rock Rose
Comments (24)Jeri, I have no idea of its relationship to Mrs. Dudley Cross. I do know that it has, at times, been sold under that name in Florida. But it is certainly not -- flower form is different, and of course, this one has prickles. There are numerous roses that were grown in the Florida Keys, probably latest 19th or early 20th century, on their own roots, that became nicknamed "rock roses." Among them are Louis Philippe, Old Blush, Maggie, and this one. But as far as I know, no one has ever identified this one with even a probable name....See MoreThese Plumerias just flowered, Key West Red, and P. Cubense Plumeria.
Comments (7)I don't know why the Key West Red is not more popular, but everyone seems to like the Hilo Beauty more. I'm always being asked for a cutting of it. I also have the Miami Rose flowering now. I'll post a picture of it later....See Morekey west restaurant recommendations
Comments (11)Just an update to thank you for all the recommendations and tips, I think we did them all! Santiagos was hands down the best place we ate. It was just DH and I and we tried 5 tapas, each one was great. I wish we had a bigger group so we could have tried more items off the menu! We ate breakfast twice at Blue Heaven, once on our own, and then once so our friends could go. I am not a fan of breakfast, so it was good, but not great to me, but I don't think I took advantage of their specialties. The atmosphere is great and super fun. The first day we went around 11 and there was live entertainment and a psychic. I had the filet bolognese at NIne One Five and it was delicious, The butterfly conservatory was great too - very small, but interesting. The birds were beautiful. I did two food tours while I was there:) And from those I can recommend the Key Lime Pie at Old Time Bakery, and the Cuban Food at El Siboney. Both of my food tour guides said once peak season hits the restaurants are packed, so if you're going in March, I'd recommend making reservations well in advance if there are certain places you're looking forward to....See Morejamie81
