Need tree identification

About 6 years ago when we moved into this house the conservation people gave away native trees. These were little tiny bare root trees and most of mine died. We have a bank beside a river and today when spraying some Thistles I noticed this tree that must have survived and has been slowly growing. I have no idea what this tree is and have not been able to identify it from my tree and shrub book. Anyone have any ideas.

You weren't able to find it in your tree books because it's not a tree. It's a Thalictrum, possibly Thalictrum dasycarpum but there are lots of them so I could easily be wrong. It's a carefree native forb that the bees enjoy. If you've got the space for it, it's lovely. Do you remember seeing something purple in the spring down there?

Ah Ha............ common name Meadow Rue. Thanks so much! Was able to find it in one of my perennial books by Lois Hole. It looks so much like a tree........one tall sturdy centre trunk. Didn't notice any colour down there in the spring but our spring was so cold and wet I didn't walk the bank very often. Will watch for it next year. Thanks again.
