Do nasturtiums really repel insect

I never had a bad insect problem before, except for slugs in rainy years and japanese beetles on my roses. This year, something is eating up my cucumber seedlings and fast! Sunday when I weeded, they all looked great. Rain Mon & Tues so I didn't get out to look at them until Tues night. I cannot believe the difference, many of the seedlings leaves look so chewed up, maybe too far gone to save. This is in 2 days time. Tonight I am going out to do a better inspection and see if I can pinpoint what insects it could be (slugs? aphids? cucumber beetles? Last night it was too dark to really get a good look) Each year I do plant nasturtiums throughout my veggie garden, which I did this year too, but they got a late start. Do they really repel so many insects? What else can I do to save my cuke plants before I lose them all? I've kept my veggie garden organic for 5 yrs, but I fear this year I'll have to break down and spray it. But - with what?
