Avocado Growers

What variety of avocado do I have?

Hello, my family and I moved to a house that had this beautiful avocado tree. The previous owners never watered it so we are nursing it back to health. We had a bountiful bloom season in the winter and now all these avocados. The local nurseries can't tell me what variety it is. I live in SoCal in La Habra Heights so we thought it was a Hass, but don't know for sure. Can someone please help. Here is a couple of pics of the tree and its fruit

We need way, way more information. Even then it's not a gaurentee.

Is there a graft line? If not then it's not a specific kind of avocado but a unique seedling tree.

When does it bloom?

When it blooms is it in the morning then afternoon or afternoon then morning?

How fast does it grow?

Is that a picture of a mature fruit?

When does the fruit mature?

How large is the seed in the fruit?

What color is the skin when it's ripe?

What is the texture of the ripe fruit?

Is it oily or watery?

Is it stringy or non stringy?

Does the flesh oxidize or no?

A...as P has said, it is near-impossible to say for sure. By the picture and growth habit...I can tell you some varieties it is not. Best guess is probably by harvesting the fruit (letting some hang longer and longer) and try to identify by the fruit. Your pic is a bit hazy of the fruit. Hass will start to turn black the longer it hangs (starting about this time of year)....depending on your location/weather. It looks to me it needs some serious pruning/shaping....if I am making out the photo correctly. Avos are long-lived trees...and I am happy you chose to save and nurture this one. Thank you everyone for the quick response! I do have one question, though. If it likes a hard pruning, (and lets face it, who doesnt?)why does it seem that it only growes from new wood? Last year, we had nothing (alright, maybe a few small flowers), but this year, this is setting buds left and right. We did not prune it at all, but this year, and for the firsttime, it is really going! Also, how can I get the plant to be more full (more leaves)? I am growing this clematis up a white lamppost, and it doesnt seem very "bushy" for lack of a better term... Justin

I would guess #1 is fortunei Aureomarginata and #2 is fortunei Albomarginata, both very common hosta. I agree that #3 is Undulata, and #4 might be fortunei Hyacinthina - again both very common. Compare yours with the photos at HostaLibrary.org and see what you think. Have fun. Lois

Crenda- lol I love this Jade! I don't have an armed gaurd for it, but I know the feeling! I have 4 kids and my eyes bug out of my head when they start running around by it! Lol I don't want to get rid of it. I buy succulents for someone who knows I have it, and she approached me about selling it, or trading some other plants for it. It got me thinking that I should find out what its worth and what kind of Jade it is. I actually bought it from someone on Craigslist 2 years ago who couldn't take into a retirement home! She told me it belonged to her mother, and that it was about 60 years old, moved here from the California coast. I got it and another smaller Jade for $65! I didn't know anything about Jades at the time, but I was in LOVE with it!
