11 years Old Hyacinth Bean Sprouted

I've had those seeds for more than 11 years old. Always afraid to grow the tall poles beans since I never got chance to build the trellis. But I did build one this year. So I put down those seeds just to see what happened. Now I see most of them sprouted. This is just amazing. The seeds have been stored in room temperature, never paid much attention.

Not sure about the yield this year, but at least I can enjoy the beautiful flowers and maybe save some seeds for next year.

I have problems with bean weevils eating the seed... A volunteer hyacinth sprouted with my long beans this year. It already has flowers now. You might get a decent yield with a multiple plants growing... What variety is it?

You might try this to keep them stunted...I did this last year and accidently stunted mine. I put them in clay pots and had them in the shade and they never got more than a foot tall, then when I saw they were not growing well, I put them in the ground. These things took off and were almost 20 feet long. They overtook my satellite dish that is on top of my garden shed so bad that I had to go cut them back away from it. The pic below is in September, by the end of the season they were half way to the house on the satellite line! The blooms are beautiful though. Here they are in October...this only two plants.

Castor beans need warmth to germinate. I soaked mine last year for only 6 hours them put 3" deep them in pots in full sun in late May to germinate. I planted 12 seeds and 10 sprouted. When they had true leaves I planted them out. This year I have tons of seeds I saved from last year and look forward to planting them again. Kris

Speaking of hyacinth bean vine, is yours growing yet?

Several of the ones I planted in ground and in pot have germinated but they are only about 6" tall. No apparent vining yet, though they are up to maybe 3-4 sets of leaves but not much more yet. I bought some kind of blue hyacinth bean from online store, but no germination on that yet, even though they were planted around the same time.

Were you given a description or were they "surprise" seed? I know there are purple with pink flowers, pure green with white flowers, green with purple edging, thin pods and lots of other varieties.. I got seeds of the green with white flower variety from sombody in NJ..

I was given some dry beans with purple stripe shells a long time ago. That is all I remember.

Oh ok.. Those are the ones I grew up eating.. The one I have now grows a pretty large vine. I have a hard time keeping up with eating the beans.
