Thermal Industries 5000 series vs Soft-lite Imperial LS model
Comments (9)Re soft-lite ls, I had them installed 3 years ago, one awning, the rest dh. I bought them largely on the advice of vinyl window "pros" on various sites. My experience is mixed. Although they seem to be well designed, workmanship issues on a few were apparent, especially with some sloppy weatherstripping. The awning is causing bigger problems. The heat of sunlight seems to slightly affect the frame causing difficulties with closing. As soon as it cools down, it operates normally. Also the weatherstripping on the bottom of the sash has already torn off. I'm still waiting to see what, if anything, the authorized dealer does about it......See MoreSoftlite Pro/Imperial LS/Okna 500----head hurting!
Comments (5)I am also happy I got those 8 quotes. It weeded out the contractors that I would NEVER work with. For the exact same products, as in the windows listed above, I have people quote me from $15k to over $22k for the EXACT SAME WINDOWS! There is no reason to be that different, and yes, I made sure that all the specs were the same (ie-double pane, etc). EDIT-I should have stated that I am leaning towards the Oknas, not the Softlites. Sorry for the confusion. This post was edited by border411 on Wed, May 28, 14 at 9:55...See MoreSimonton 5500 vs higher end (Okna, sunrise, soft lite)
Comments (24)WOW: "When a window is Gold Label certified, it is supposed to be a representative sample of the window submitted for testing." Gold Label/Hallmark test sizes are not worst case in terms of the air infiltration calc...the smallest size typically is. The difference can be be pretty large, and some companies base advertising on this worst case size scenario, some don't. Also, some companies may seek that the claim has statistical validity (as in some sort of confidence interval), leading them to publish lower performing numbers in general. (Others just test just a few units, which can result in a higher claim). Also, some companies take liberties with the phrase "representative," interpretating it to mean prepresentative of design intent, not necesarily production...the part size and placement variation that occurs over the production of many units can have large impact on air infiltration performance. Without ensuring that the exact same approach is used, it's misleading to compare the numbers......See MoreWhich is a Better Window: Soft Lite Imperial LS or Serious Window
