No luck with sempervivums + echeveria

Managed to kill off atleast 3 semps and my 2 echeverias to date!! Horrible! :( Are they really hard to maintain in a tropical setting? They're indoors btw.

Cause of that, in my recent haul I sticked to cacti. Care to ID? Thanks!

My biggest problem with echeveria is that they need good light, otherwise they turn ugly/leggy and etiolated. My last echeveria was put out of its misery a while back... in retrospect I wish I had done a cutting and retried growing it.

Just don't over water the cactus and you'll do great!

(Side note, I've since gotten one new echeveria and one aeonium. Hopefully they grow well or else they are just not suitable for my location and I may give up like you, sadly!).

Thanks for the advice!

I still have the pups of the sempervivums that went to succulent heaven. I won't buy any more unless these babies are a success story! :) Hopefully, they'll live!

Hi Jayco...yes there is...on semps the leaves are usually much less succulent. Echeverias have a very distinctive 'look' to them but usually fatter leaves. At least, this has been my experience. Post a pic and we'll see.

I suggested possibly oedema, but it could be something else on your echeveria. Rest of my post was in relation to your sempervivum (even if you didn't ask-just because of advice you got). Sorry if I was out of line. With so much rain, I guess steps have to be taken. You could grow it in container-outside, maybe in somewhat protected (from rain) location? I have seen many photos of succulents grown in your area; lots, if not most, in containers. See this blog for example: http://www.houstongardengirl.com/2011/08/succulents-of-seattle.html I had to bring all of my plants into the breezeway few times when raining a lot, and we don't get as much rain as you. Not very convenient. They could be 'covered' too. That may not be very convenient either. Sempervivums reproduce by the seeds too, not only 'chicks'. Hens & chicks is common name, and it is also used for other members of Crassulaceae family. Echeverias reproduce by offsets or seeds.

Probably too much water for the conditions and soil. If you're going to grow C&S indoors you'll have the best chance of success with the best light possible and a fast-draining, mineral-based mix.

they're indoors but i place them by the window, so I'm pretty sure they have more than 8 hrs of sunlight. :( then I use a mixture of pumice and soil. ?? Plus, upon repotting, I like waited for 1.5 weeks before watering them. What else am i missing :'(

Semps grow really well for me--outside. I've never tried to grow them inside.

Sorry lilbit just a cactus dude,but that didn't mean I have a few succulents. At the HCSS show I got a nice agave Victoria

Semp's, as noted, do best outdoors. They're listed zones 2 - 7, so tropical areas are going to be a bit outside of the optimum range, I'd guess.

Sempervivums like cool, Echeverias like arid. Kind of the opposite of tropical. :(

Try something in
Hylocereeae, natives of the tropical forests of Central America. Should be spectacular for you.
