Arbor Made from Scraps

For Mother's Day my DH made me an arbor for our daughter's wedding and then my garden. I am planning to grow a clematis and a honeysuckle on it. We were shaping it like the church windows and it was easy with a heat gun and some zip ties. Dow bathroom cleaner is great for dirty/mildewed lattice.

What a lovely gift. Shaping it like the church windows was a great idea. I've borrowed this idea hoping I can get one made similar to this one.

It really wasn't hard but takes 2 people.

I free handed the curve on paper, (mark where you want to start the curve and end the curve at the top of the center of lattice panel, then draw the curve between the 2 points.) cut out and trace it with a black indelible pen on lattice.

Cut lattice with a jig saw.

We 1st zip tied the edging to the straight part and then would use the heat gun back and forth in about a 3" area until the edging would get warm and be bendable at the curved parts and then zip tie it in place to cool then move up the edging a few inches and heat/zip tie etc until you get to the point at the top.

We did both sides and marked the edging where it crossed so they would meet in the middle and be straight. I did cut a small angled piece of lattice that would fit in the edging at the point joint and screwed it in place on both sides to keep the point stable.

Then when it is cooled we used stainless steel screws on the back that were long enough to go thru the edging/lattice and into the other side of the edging a tiny bit. We did the screws because we have done other lattice projects and with heating and cooling from weather they tend to come apart if not screwed. Use stainless or you will have rust stains.

They are mounted with zip ties on PVC pipe that is slid over rebar that has been hammered into the ground.

What are your clothes line poles made of, wood, heavy steel, light weight steel, aluminum? It should work to hold up a grape vine if they are difinitely sturdy poles. What could you make the top frame of the arbor with? And, how to attach it to the poles would be a bigger decision. My clothes line poles, that DH made from iron pipes found in the scrap heap from the electrical company has a top T, cross bar. Does your poles have a cross bar or are they just straight poles? You could use conduit or pvc pipe to make a cross bar. Someone here used a heavy gauge, wire, cattle fencing panel to make a trellis. Perhaps you could drape one or two panels over your poles & attach it with wire? Good luck and I hope you get your get-away arbor! akup_a

The morning glories are planted at the bottom. It is just some annuals planted up higher. I think next year I will add more in other slates. He just added a bottom board and potting soil. It is getting fuller everyday. It was a really nice surprise one day when I got home from work.

Made the trek to Great Lakes Roses near Ann Arbor

I also got some roses there earlier this summer. Mine seem to be quite tough, coming back after some bugs stipped them in ONE DAY! I was shocked at the difference from morning to night, leaves gone. I am still not sure what the bug was, I have never had Japanese beetle problems, can't think of any others that would be so fast. I have kept them dusted, new leaves are coming along. Plants bloomed anyway! I am looking forward to seeing how they develop in the next couple years. I got a couple old-fashioned ones, pretty thornless. I thought they were the same as my mothers rose, but they are not. I will have to keep trying to get a sprout going off that bush. Been unsuccessful for 2 years, many tries. Keeps things interesting though! I was pretty amazed at the many varieties available, colors and sizes of the flowers. Probably was a good thing I took the truck. We could only buy what would fit in the back seat, not fill the whole box! One lady went around with us, explained good choices for our wants. Answered all our questions, extremely helpful. I would go back again, was an hour plus drive each way for us as well. They have a nice website under Great Lakes Roses. Helpful in locating roses, seeing pictures of named varieties. Just don't do mailorder. I highly recommend Great Lakes to any person looking at roses, CERTAINLY worth the drive.

It could work, but if your eating most of your meals there, don't put a trash unit in the island (ya know, some trash smells don't blend well w/ dinner aromas). Also, if you and your family plan to hang out there, you definitely want bar stools w/ backs. No back leads to back strain for longer periods of time, than say, eating a quick bowl of cereal.

Nice looking trellis! You may want to weave some fishing line through the lattice since clematis twines with the leaf stems and so likes something narrower (1/2" diameter or less) to wrap around.

That's a good idea but since i have honeysuckle growing with the clematis on other trellises they help each other.
