Cherry tree has yellow leaves. Help!

Hi there everyone.

I got given a Cherry tree for my birthday on 21st May so I have had it under a month. It had been in a very small bag since November but seemed fine.

So we replanted it into this large tub as you can see in the picture. I read some advice and thought I might have been choking the roots so have pushed the soul back and given it a good water.

Please, if anyone knows what it could be or what more I need to do, let me know. All the photos will show you what it was planted in and how big it is etc.

I'm guessing you are in the UK. Is there no way you can plant it in the ground? That would be the best solution. If you can't I would repot it in John Innes no.3, not that multi purpose compost.

Does the pot have holes in the bottom? If so, after repotting I would give it an absolute soaking - and I mean absolutely sopping. Then leave it for a week and do it again. If there are no holes you need to put some in. You will also need to repot into a bigger container after 2 or so years. Fruit Trees in Containers

transplant shock ..

poor media for a tree ...

and over watering ...

it would have been better if you had potted it up.. BEFORE it leafed out ... then the leaves wouldnt have looked like this.. since they wouldnt have been there ...

it is also best to put a new transplant in full shade until the roots start working ...

i would not water it again ... until your finger.. inserted 3 inches.. indicates the media is drying ...

if i were to have done this.. i would have used up to half wood chips in that media you used ... trees like a sip of water.. then near total draining.. and near drying before another sip ...

your muck will keep it too wet in the long run .. unless you are very keen on making sure it doesnt stay sopping wet ...

the problem with that all-purpose stuff.. is that annuals and perennials... like very spongy wet media ... and i am sure that stuff is great for that ...

but not for trees ..

lme: You should be concerned indeed. Cherry tree rootstocks are highly susceptible to "wet feet", which can kill a young tree in a matter of days. The roots literally drown. If the trees are potted or rootballed trees, which they must be if they are leafed out, a "sink" may be created where the water concentrates. Bareroot trees are usually better for that and several other reasons. Cherry trees should only be planted where the soil type and topography lend themselves to fairly rapid drainage in conditions of high rainfall. Research Pear Scab and Fabraea Leaf Spot. Examine your tree and see if one of these diseases may be what you have. Not knowing what type of pear tree, European or Asian, it is harder to decide what you may have.

You describe cherry leaf spot but the picture you showed is the same powdery mildew picture from before. I went to your album and found cherry leaf spot. Again it depends on how far spread it is. If it's not that bad you could ignore it, clean up in the off season and make sure to have a good dormant spray program. I generally get some leaves with it most years and it's usually not a problem (except this year on the same tree that has the powdery mildew problem). If it's something you want to worry about you could spray, I don't have as much faith in organic sprays or kitchen cures on cherry leaf spot as I do with powdery mildew. It may or may not be listed on the label but Immunox should take care of cherry leaf spot. If you buy the Immunox make sure to read the label before buying, Immunox plus has insecticide and isn't rated for fruit trees and there are other Immunox's that aren't for fruit trees. If you've got fruit ripening it's probably too close to harvest to spray so you could grit your teeth and wait it out and spray after harvest (or maybe not, I notice that is another difference between my label and the one I downloaded).

Mike, Thanks for taking the time to answer, I appreciate all the help and patience that all of you give to those of us just starting out. You are right - determining moisture can be difficult. I had the wooden dowel up too high. When I inserted it deeper into the pot, I found it to be very moist indeed. I have cut back on the watering; I haven't watered for a week. Maybe that will also eliminate the gnats. I haven't noticed any newly yellow leaves for a few days, so I am hoping that correcting for the very low water pH has also had a positive effect on absorption. As for the fixing the mix, I wouldn't know where to start improving it. Well, I've got some ideas... Maybe, some of the bark pieces are too big compared to perlite(the bark was screened through a 1/2 inch screen and the perlite was rinsed over insect screen). Is the bark too big or the perlite too small? Here's a picture. Any other suggestions for improvement are welcome.
