Need help identifying vine...

Hello, this vine is starting to tangle its way through my roses and my hydrangeas. I'm not sure what it is, and if it can just be left alone or if I need to yank it out asap. Thanks.

It looks like it might well be bindweed, Convolvulus arvensis. IMO you want to get rid of it ASAP.

There's a big thread in the Weeds forum pertaining to bindweed...you might want to search for it. I read on that thread someone had success getting rid of it by gathering up some of the foliage (still attached to the roots in the ground) and immersing it in a container of Roundup. Make sure it's protected from rain and stable so it doesn't tip over. Yanking it out won't really do anything...the roots can travel very far.

I've got it all over. It is a type of vetch - not either of the crown vetches, as the flower is a vivid purple - but I can't now remember what, nor where I looked to find out. Try a local wildflower book, if you can't find it elsewhere, as it is a commonly growing plant. It's a royal pain, not least because it very easily breaks off from the roots when you pull at it, so the roots stay to resprout! It sends tendrils all over the place, and can, if really healthy, start to smother small plants. Because it IS sort of lacy, it won't do too much damage to larger plants, except entwine itself through them.

I guess it's possible, floral :-) Sure hard to see clearly. The apparent serrations may be a little indicative of that vine but the leaf shape doesn't look quite right. And to be honest, I've never seen one that was so devoid of foliage so maybe the overall poor condition of the vine is altering my judgement. And I wouldn't exactly consider Thunbergia alata's flowers as "big" :-) Did they say what color the flowers might be? That could help.

i have these all over my forsythia..for everyone I am able to trace back to the root and pull up from there there is at least 10 I don't/can't get. it hasn't choked any of my larger bushes yet but it has choked out a few late spring flowers so if you opt for managing it by pulling it every now and then just be extra diligent around flowers as these things very quickly climb the stems and overtake them,.
