Name That Plant!

Does anyone know this white flower? Is it a weed? Desperate!

Help! I bought these seeds online last week. The seller's description only says Campanula, does not say what kind.

I would like to know the exact scientific name, to learn more about it. I asked the seller, but no reply.

This is the only photo provided, here is the description:

Campanula are a wonderful perennial plant garden addition. The seeds
are from a Campanula featuring showy white flowers. The plant thrives
in partial sunlight exposures in moist yet well-drained soil. The plant
will reach a height and diameter, at maturity, 2 feet. This plant is
reliable and hardy in USDA zones 4 - 9.
Seeds were harvested in August 2014
Easy germination instructions are included.
Each packet contains 9 seeds.

It could be a Campanula, yes.

Why on earth buy seeds from a vendor that does not identify the plant correctly? There are hundreds of more reputable seed sellers out there. I hope you didn't pay more than a few cents for 9 seeds.

Yes a Campanula my guess 'Campanula latifolia alba'

A bit more info might be helpful; what's the size of leaves & flower heads, height of plant & what does the rest of the plant look like? That said, it does resemble a 'weed' I see around here w/ white flower heads approx. 1/2" or so & resembling Gomphrena...?

I have the same problem Bloomingamaryllis... Something started growing in my lasagne bed that I didn't recognize as either weed or plant, so I thought I'd let it go. It's growing very fast though, so I'm of the opinion that it's too good to be true, so out it goes. On the other hand... I've been waiting for my lone surviving (of 3) Salvia Greggi to bloom. But the plant that's next to that marker is blooming now with the tiniest of white daisy flowers. So I guess none of the Greggi survived. So what is this? A misshipment from the nursery? I'm pretty sure it's not German chamomile. I have what think is that growing elsewhere and it's different foliage. This is very, very fine foliage. The flowers themselves are about a 1/4" across. I'm wondering if it might be some type of aster, since it just started blooming now? Alice

my first thought was campanula punctata, but that would have white roots that go down a ways and then tubers under that; then more roots going down under those - like that pesky orange alstroemeria! both are horrible weeds, IMO. are you digging or pulling when you weed it out? how far down do the roots go? (ie can you get the entire root when you dig?) do you notice if it is lessening when you weed it each year? does it bloom? when? does it grow tall? what is the flower color and form? you say it has long white roots - i'm wondering if the roots are tap roots, like a dandelion, or runner roots like a Canada thistle's - they go down a ways, then interconnect across and underground; hard to eradicate that kind of weed. just keep the tops pulled - ie don't let it photosynthesize and eventually you will tire it out. by all means keep it from going to seed. look around and see if you can find a "parent plant" that looks like it. that may be your culprit going to seed. this is a good photo. if you have a county extension agent, noxious weed board, or even master gardeners that do plant ID, start with them. i'd start with the extension agent first.

Oh I think you're right! We DID have a large stand of volunteer flowers that looked just like your link growing back there before everything was cleared out. I never knew what they were called and I somehow assumed when everything was pulled up/bulldozed/trenched for sprinklers, that they were gone with the rest of the mess. Haha. Hardy things, huh? Thank you!

Looks like my peach leaf bellflower, C. persicifolia. White or blue. My blue ones are in bloom now. I'm going to check out C. latifolia.

Not C persicifolia. Flowers are not the right shape.

There are loads of possibilities since we can't see the height, the habit or the foliage. C latifolia would be one. C trachelium would be another. Be aware that even if these were harvested by the seller from white flowered plants there is no guarantee that all the progeny will have white flowers. You may well end up with a good number of blue flowered plants.

There are literally hundreds of species of Campanula, not to mention all the hybrids and cultivars. So when buying seed in future it would be wise to get the full botanical name so you know what you are getting.
