need design ideas for front yard
Comments (14)The house is small, but it has a lot of mass with the solid walled porch. I would consider "window boxes"the full length of it to break up the mass and add some depth. My opinion is that if you convert the entire space to planting, it will make the house look more connected to the street. I think framing it in and making a space out of it will do more than displacing the space with all plants. Lawn, contrary to a new anti-lawn agenda talking points, is not there for no reason at all. It holds space - usable space. It also creates foreground and contrast to give shape to your plantings. I'd rather see you distract background views of the neighboring houses and draw the eye into your space. I know that there is a big anti-lawn agenda that is driving a lot of environmentally conscious people into tearing up their lawns and making more messy plantings and erosion problems than beautiful landscapes and clean air and water. This is a very basic and very typical landscape. Little hedges and the trees with colorful underplantings frame in the space. Colorful basic planting at the porch helps form the space. Window boxes down play the stark wall of the porch. Traditional plantings, even lawns, have evolved because when they are done well, they do several positive things. Boring? Maybe more predictable, but not necessarily boring or exiting. Clean, pleasant, and more usable and versatile than filling a square bed containing a hodge-podge of plants. A small front lot full of plants with a driveway on either side is going to become periferal planting to the driveways more often than not. The eye will go to the driveways in those cases. Its a cute house (in a nice way) that should be celebrated and accented rather than mitigated. Certainly, there are people out there who can make great things in this space that will work on every level, but these typically become a mess when most people attempt them for the first time....See MoreI need some design advice for my front yard beds
Comments (24)The "before" picture showing shrubs lining both sides of the walkway should be enough to permanently scare you away from reverting to that scheme. As Bio says, it will make the walk look narrower. It will look less inviting and feel it, too. You definitely need to extend the walk to the curb as it has the look of an abandoned, unfinished project. Try to find the best match to the stone as possible. You'll be forgiven that there will be a "shadow" where the new meets the old. Over time, it will lessen. You could widen the walk a little (8" each side) by bordering it with brick laid sailor course. Or by using a plain concrete band if that's your preference. If you're going to include a bed around a tree, don't make a little bed around a large tree as the proportions will be way off. Tree beds are not good for annuals (which must be changed out periodically. They are better for permanent groundcovers or perennials that serve as groundcovers. When you have a lot of grade change, shrubs below windows do not need to be matched kind. What's important is that they have the same relationship where they meet the window. What everyone said about deepening the bed ... for sure. Instead of 2, 3, or 4,' it should be 6' at the shallowest and flare to meet any deeper bed configuration. The house could use another tree off of it's right corner to balance the picture. Color is always nice by the entrance. Colorful perennials wrapping the corners is another way to interject some seasonal color. It would be good to someday replace the lamp post with a taller one....See MoreI need help with low maintenance landscape design for my front yard.
Comments (18)I've noticed that whatever size is printed on the tag or is claimed on the Internet, is about half of the real final size. In their desire to see quick results people are prone to getting fast growing plants that soon get out of bounds. I think it's better not to rush it as time seems to pass quickly as soon as one focusing on other things. With water and fertilizer I find most plants to grow reasonably fast. There are always exceptions but as a general rule, they do....See MoreNeed help with Front yard Design Please!!
Comments (9)Some landscape design firms don’t like a sloped front yard, but we love them! Sloped yards are a great opportunity to play with hardscape, entryways, and retaining walls. If you are in a dryer climate, adding retaining walls, pathways, and garden beds to your front yard makes it easier to avoid grass. Or, if you want to keep your lawn, you should look into leveling the front yard with a retaining wall at the front of the yard near the street. It sounds like you are at the beginning stages of planning this project, now is a great time to look around at houses with a similar shape, color, and lot slope and see how the homeowners worked with their space. As for the garbage cans, maybe look into hiding them on the right side of the house, or in the garage if space allows. We’ve also compiled some of ourbest tips for planning your front yard, which might be helpful if you aren’t planning on hiring a landscaping company. Good luck, can’t wait to see how it turns out!...See MoreYuan Gong Hamilton ON CANADA 6b
